New Jersey has a long and successful history of peach cultivation dating back to the 1600's. At present, New Jersey is the 4th largest peach producing state in the union. Unlike the largest producer, California, nearly 100% of Jersey peaches go directly to the fresh market. That means that from July to September consumers on the east coast can enjoy peaches that were on the tree no more than a couple of days before hitting the supermarkets. Of course those lucky enough to live in the Garden State can just stop by a roadside market and get a peach that might have been picked that morning!
The joy of peaches starts earlier in the year with the opening of the peach blossoms. The 'Cycles think they are as pretty as the famous cherry blossoms in DC and we always plan a couple of bicycle rides to see them in their full glory. Not all varieties bloom at the same time so there is usually about a 10-14 day window to see good blossoms in south Jersey. Weather permitting, this happens in early to mid April.
Gloucester county is the largest peach producing county in New Jersey. This cache gives the seeker the opportunity to see some of this agriculture. At the right times of year, beautiful vistas or tasty treats might be an additional reward.
