Geocache Description:

Une source chaude en ville.Hot spring in the town.

This ground water training can provide a very hot water ( 158°F).

The name of Artesian wells roots from french Province of Artois where monks have drilled many artesians wells since 1126.

An artesian aquifer contains confined groundwater. This water can flow upward trough a well without any pump.
The aquifer is a layer of soft rocks. This porous stone is confined between impermeable rocks and they keep the pressure high.

Here, we have interested in the Lanternier's spring, an artesian well.

This water is chloritaded, with sodium, sulfated and calcic. Those trace elements can cure rheumatism.

This spring originates from an artesian layer. This one is a corrugated geological structure with a synclinal retaining the water.Above, we find a waterproof layer.
The rainwater flows (from the woods of Haye) in this space and the pressure increases. The piezometric head exceeds the topographic level then the water shoots out. (The piezometric headb or hydraulic head is a specific mesurment of water pressure above a geodetic datum.)

Here we can observe different stratas:

- the Rock Salt or Halite was resulted from drying up of the sea.Halite forms isometric crystals. We can observe two salt beds: first: 15 meters thick- second: 50 meters. This underground bed is exploited near Nancy.

- the Gres is a geological formation. This strata dates back to the Lower Cretaceous. Sometimes,we can find inside fossils of Dinosaur.

- the Coal: Water and mud have allowed to create this layer.Indeed, they have prevented to oxidizing and biodegrading. Then, atmospher carbon was trapped in the ground. The coal is the largest source of energy providing electrecity in the world.

- the Artesian Aquifer is here a layer of Limestone composed largely of the mineral calcite. The primary source of this calcite is most commonly marine organisms.Their shells were deposited on ocean floors or conglomerated in coral reef.

The Permian is a geological period from 300 to 200 Millions Years before the present.

This spring provides hot water for 3 pools, one of wich is round.
The town has begun a restoration campaign. They took their time.

You can log this Earthcache by submitting:
A picture of you with your GPS unit in front of the allegorical statue.
and please answer the following research questions:

1- With what coal is formed?

2- What kind of rock is the limestone?

3- How deep is the well drilling?

4- Who has created the mosaic celling ( on the premises)?
