Hacker's Hill on Quaker Ridge in Casco, Maine offers spectacular views of the Sebago Lake region, and the White Mountains.

This scenic and historic area, located high in the central part of Casco Maine, has been known for two centuries as Quaker Ridge. It was named for the members of the Society of Friends who built a meetinghouse here in 1814. Services were held there on a regular basis until the 1920's. The  Obadiah Gould homestead was the first home built on Quaker Ridge, and sits just opposite the entrance to Hacker's Hill. Just up the road sat the Quaker Ridge Schoolhouse, originally called the Friends School and was built by Clark Norton Maxfield about 1849.  It was renovated and moved to Casco Village, in 1971. I can still remember that day, as I grew up just down the street, at Maplebrook Farm.

On a clear day there is an unobstructed view of Mt. Washington, the tallest peak in New England, to the coastal city of Portland Maine. A distance East to West of over 50 miles. Sunsets outline the White Mountain range on the western horizon. Looking to the north the Appalachian trail weaves its way over mountains named Old Spec, Baldpate and Goose Eye in the Mahoosuc Range. Five miles to the south of Hacker's Hill is Big Sebago lake. Even though it is beautiful year round, I would suggest a Fall trip to view the spectacular foliage. Ryefield Mill is located directly below and has some of the most beautiful Fall colors I have ever seen.

Access:
The Gate is Open May through October 8:30am to ½ hour after sunset. Gate closed to cars on Tuesdays & Thursdays. You can park at the beginning of the road and walk to the top when the gate is closed. Gate is closed in hazardous weather, high winds and lightning storms. Please be respectful, as this land is privately owned, yet has been opened to the public. Thanks to the Hall family.

Directions:
Quaker Ridge Road runs between Rt 302 and Rt 11 in Casco, Maine. Hacker's Hill Rd is 3.6 miles from Rt 302. Traffic during the Summer, and on weekends along Rt 302 is very busy between Portland and Sebago Lake. I suggest you find a way to come in from Rt 11 or Rt 121.

Cache:
The cache is in a small Lock-n-Lock container. Initial cache contains a fossil sharks tooth (16-20 million years old) found on Amelia Island, FL
 (and other stuff).
