#1 Aber Falls - Bont Newydd Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Southerntrekker: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not responded to recent logs I am archiving it.

The Geocache Maintenance guideline explains a CO's responsibility towards checking and maintaining the cache when problems are reported. Caches that have been archived for lack of maintenance will not be unarchived. This is explained in the Help Center.

Geocache Description:

Coedydd Aber Nature Reserve

Coedydd Aber nature reserve is one of our family’s most favourite places. The walk will take you in an area of scenic beauty which leads to a spectacular waterfall in the foothills of Y Carneddau. You will see a variety of habitats and a diversity of species of woodland and of open farmland and scrub. The woodland is home to a range of birds, who feed on the grounds and through the woodland and the nearby coniferous forest. There are many historic and archaeological monuments, including round and long huts, cairns, a medieval hafod and an iron age hill fort testifying to the long history of human occupation.

A big thank you to the Warden and the Countryside Council for Wales for allowing me to place these caches here. Please be particularly careful whilst looking for the caches not to disturb this precious landscape.

The Walk

The Aber Falls series of Geocaches 1 - 10 have been arranged to take you on a circular route. It is approximately 4 miles, if completing the full circuit, and so will take at least a couple of hours to complete. The area is truly spectactular, I recommend making the most of your visit, pick a nice sunny day and bring a picnic, you won't regret it!
The first part of the walk from the recommended parking to the falls is on a good track with a steady, not too steep climb. From the main waterfall is a regular footpath / track, rising again steadily, with the last part back down to the road a steep descent. Make sure you're suitably equiped and plan accordingly. There are many websites about walking in this area if you require further information before embarking on this mission.
There's a lovely little cafe in the village of Abergwyngregyn, 'Caffi yr Hen Felin', well worth a stop for a, 'Paned o de' and a slice of their delicious homemade cake.

You can find a simple route map and a list of the Aber cache series coordinates on the link below;

The Cache

This cache has been placed just a few yards along the trail from the car parking at Bont Newydd. There is more parking just a little further up at the Forestry Commission car park, which also has toilets. Both will cost £2 for the whole day. Alternatively there is free car parking at the village.

Please be careful when retrieiving the cache as you will be very close to the stream edge. If the stream is flooded it will probably be safer to leave untill another day.

Once you have the cache follow the trail up to where it meets the main path and continue on up.

Congratulations to Ecobake for being FTF on 11/09/2010
