What is an Apopkan? Why is there a museum for them? And what makes an Apopkan “museum quality”? This cache is an attempt to provide answers for these questions and more. If there was a one half star rating this cache would qualify.
The name Apopka comes from the Creek Indian words aha meaning potato and papka meaning eating place, so Apopka roughly translates as potato eating place. The settlement which became Apopka dates back to the 1840’s. The Masonic Lodge was organized in 1857 and the Lodge building, which still stands at its original location at Alabama Avenue and US 441, was completed in 1859. For several years following the completion of The Lodge the community was referred to as “The Lodge”, as Masons from throughout Central Florida attended meetings there. The Town of Apopka City was incorporated in 1882.
The Apopka Historical Society museum AKA Museum of The Apopkans is a free museum dedicated to the collecting, preserving and sharing the history of the area with all who will listen. The museum is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. If you can visit during these times the exhibits are well worth the time. The museum has approved the placement of this cache, so please if you are able to visit during the museum open hours go inside and identify yourself as a geocacher and thank them for the cache. If the person you speak to doesn’t know what that means ask for Martha Glass. The museum also has a website (www.apopkamuseum.org) with a link to an 8.2 mile historic walking tour of the area. This cache is a good one for the kids who wonder what did people do before…?
The cache is a small ammo box (7" x 3 1/2" x 10"). The original contents are the log book and pencil, a rail road spike, foam light bulb, tooth brush, can opener, tape measure/level pen knife, computer screen duster brush, rubix cube key chain, snow globe, 2 matchbox cars, canvas shopping bag, and more.

5/16/2003 New cache box, changed location, re-activated.
11/15/2003 Lubed the chain lock. Please loop it either through the loop on the box or the handle, not both.
6/19/2004 Went by to check on the difficulty with the lock. Actually, the box lid is fitting tighter than originally, due to some dings. Just unlatch and pull hard. I will be back by in a few days to try to straighten out the dings.
2/01/2005 (Ground Hog's Day Eve) Replaced chain and lock.
9/07/2007 Diana has resigned to spend more time with her family. According to the Apopka Chief newspaper, the museum technician position has been funded by the City of Apopka, but until the position is filled the museum will be staffed by volunteers. The hours will be irregular during this time.
3/12/2008 New contact person is Martha Glass and hours are now Monday through Friday, closed on Saturday.
6/17/2008 Thanks to RREngineer I learned I can remove missing travel bugs from the inventory. So, I removed the long time missing Leaping Lizard travel bug from the travel bug inventory.
