Located near the summit of a spectacular massif of granite in the
Organ Mountain Range.
Finding this cache will require a good sense of routefinding on
steep terrain, a high level of fitness, and an ability to safely
navigate low 5th class terrain going both up and down. The North
Rabbit Ear is one of the three Rabbit Ears that can be seen
directly east of the Rabbit Ears Plateau where Labor Ten is
located. The Rabbit Ears also present a very impressive sight from
the area of Aguirre Springs. In the below picture the North Rabbit
Ear is on the left hand side.
Here are some additional pictures of your objective:
This peak used to be climbed fairly frequently, but over the past
~10 years or so the visitation rate can be quantified as
years/climber as opposed to climbers/year. We used the Boyer's
Chute route for our ascent and it turned out to be a pretty good
choice. On our descent we rapelled a number of sections. While the
easiest route on the North Rabbit Ear is rated in the 5.3 - 5.4
range the climbing is alpine climbing, NOT sport climbing. This is
great outing for a well prepared group and it's proximity to Las
Cruces makes the aftermath much more enjoyable as you may be able
to point to the climb while sitting in your backyard drinking a
beverage of your choice!
