The first time we climbed up here the hiding place jumped out at us
and was screaming to have a cache hidden in it. We had been
planning to hide some caches in this part of the Ochils for a
while. We hadn’t originally planned to put a cache on The Nebit as
part of this but after all it is only a slight detour off the main
path to get to top.
This walk will take you through open grazing land, if you are
bringing your dogs please follow the signs advice and keep them on
a lead. Although not shown on the map there is a path all the way
to the cache. From the car park, take the small track directly
across the road and head up the hill through the trees. This is a
popular path for dog walkers, cyclists, quad bikers and walkers.
Follow this track until you cross the bridge over the burn,
bringing you out on the open hillside. From here the views start to
open up.
From here follow the track up the hillside and when this track
splits follow the left hand path for a very short distance. Very
shortly you will see a smaller path heading up The Nebit. At this
stage the track up the hill is very feint but it is there, it
becomes clearer and more defined on the way up.
The walk up is fairly steep in places, but well worth it. If you
choose a clear day the view makes up for the effort required. Once
you reach the top, you will see a small pile of stones. The cache
is not hidden in this, but the hiding place is, in our opinion,
fairly obvious.
The cache is tucked snuggily away in its hiding place, can all
finders please take care to hide it away again securely.
This cache can be done individually or as part of a loop walk
around the Ochils. However you choose to complete this cache,
please be aware of the conditions on the hills and your fitness
level. Allow adequate time to complete your chosen route, ensuring
you have appropriate clothing, food, drinks and maps with you.
Please make sure someone is aware of your route and the approximate
time you are due back.
Although not shown on all maps, there is a well defined path
around this loop and it is a popular walk around the hills. When we
were placing these caches there were loads of people out enjoying
themselves, stealth maybe required at the cache sites.
The loop starts and ends at The Alva Woodland car park. There
are 7 caches which can be completed as a loop walk, if desired. The
loop will take you up 4 summits in the Ochils, before descending
back through Tillicoultry Glen. At the bottom of the Glen walk down
Mill Street for about 150 metres and turn right along the track
signposted "to Alva" Cross the stream, by bridge, and continue
along Scotland Place until a T-Junction. Turn right and soon left
at N56º 09.463 W003º 45.168. The track follows the top of the golf
course back to the car park.
We would recommend doing the caches in a clockwise order from
the car park, although the walk can be done both ways. The caches
are
GC1APG5 - Hillside Hollow
GC1B3HF - Thee Rock
GC1CDT0 - Forever on Ever
GC1CDV4- On Top of the World
GC1CEGJ- Lawless
GCN0MG - A Bridge To Far
GCY2YA - Alva Woodland Park
