Salt Marshes and Tidal Flats Traditional Geocache
GuentherGal: Unfortunately, this one has gone missing again. Sadly, the area has changed and it does not make for a good spot to hide a cache any longer. This one had a nice run. Thanks to all who visited.

Our nearby cache “Salt Marshes and Meadows” can be a bit tricky at times. This cache is designed to be an easy pick up at a scenic spot. You are looking for a small pill bottle.
“Salt Marshes and Tidal Flats” is an interesting stop along the New Jersey Costal Heritage Trail. Here you will find the Maurice River as it widens on its way to the Delaware Bay. The water here is brackish, tidal, and is glanced by low salt marsh along its banks. It is the location of the only stand of wild rice in New Jersey, and provides habitat for over fifty percent of the species in New Jersey designated as endangered.
This area is known for its prime birding sites, especially during spring and fall migration. Nearby Mauricetown hosts an early winter raptor fest with abundant eagle sightings and autumn's purple martin extravaganza.
In 1993, the Congress of the United States designated the river and its tributaries as the Maurice National Scenic and Recreational River, as part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers program.
Thousands of years before European settlers, Native Americans used the resources of the river. The river’s name is thought to be derived from the Prince Maurice, a 17th century Dutch ship reputed to have sunk in its waters. Historically, this area has an extensive maritime history centering around oystering and other fisheries. This rich cultural background is a primary reason for the inclusion of the river system in the Wild and Scenic program. Together with the area's unparalleled natural resources it makes the watershed a unique place to visit.
