This is The Light of Saint
Francis!
Saint Francis stands in this historic village park of La Luz's
presidio and watches over this cache. Two miles to the west, a
different cache "La Luz" takes you to the history sign, so continue
your journey and go beyond the sign and feel the history in La
Luz.
The park was established in 1863, by settlers from areas on the Rio
Grande near Socorro.Be sure to appreciate the beautiful adobe and a
working acequia of this village. This "little settlement" (as
described on the historical sign two miles distant), along with
Tularosa, were the two founding villages in the Tularosa basin!
Your trek here will introduce to you a functioning acequia and some
of the oldest adobes in the area. One can easily find the famously
renown two-story adobe home of John Good. Indeed, in the 1880's, La
Luz was such a bustling town that several shootings occurred each
week.
This cache placed on Christmas Eve, just before the townsfolk
placed the Luminarias for the traditional lighting. Be sure to
return to this Presidio after dark on future Christmas Eves for a
breathtaking night visit of the true La Luz.
