Geocache Description:

An ammo box located along the Pacific Crest Trail at Windy Pass.

This was my 2 year old son's first camping trip, my first time to Hart's Pass and my first cache!

The cache is located at Windy Pass; hike #79 in the 100 Hikes in Washington's North Cascades National Park Region book.

From the hike book: Take the North Cascades Scenic Highway 20 east to Mazama and head up to Hart's Pass (notice Cache Creek on your way up). Turn right on Slate Peak Road about 1.5 miles to the first switchback and a small parking area at the trail head (48° 43.906’, 120° 40.517’, ~6800 feet). The Pacific Crest Trail (which my eMap calls an "unpaved road") gently climbs a meadow shelf the first 1/2 mile, contours steep slopes of Slate Peak, and drops into lovely Benson Basin, a creek and nice camps a few hundred feet below the tread. The way swings up and out to a spur ridge, contours to Buffalo Pass and another spur, and then descends above Barron Basin to Windy Pass. It is 4 miles from the trail head to Windy Pass.

The cache is here at Windy Pass and contains:
  • One mini tackle box
  • One tube of SPF 45 lip balm
  • A set of mini bungee cords
  • A few sheets of miscellaneous stickers
  • One bottle of hand sanitizer/first aide antiseptic
  • One Mystery Word game book
  • One safety whistle
  • Two aluminum mini flash lights (with batteries!)
Make sure you make it up to the Slate Peak lookout, the highest point in Washington accessible by car, before or after visiting this cache!

Note: The road to Hart's Pass (FS 5400) is a rough, tedious 13 miles of unpaved road that is NOT recommended for low-clearance or extra-wide vehicles; trailers are prohibited. The road is mostly one lane and, at times, feels even narrower!
