Geocache Description:

A short walk through Dunsmore Park to search for a small cache.

Wander through this pretty park on your way to the cache, and enjoy Hofert's Walls! These unique walls were built by Milton Hofert between 1946 and 1957. He used large rocks collected from around the Western U.S., including Montana, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. Look carefully and you'll find gears, bolts, chains, and even faces in the walls!

When Hofert sold the property to the City of Glendale in 1957 he tried to stipulate that the walls would be saved. The Glendale City Council refused, and threatened to condemn the property so that they could get it for a park. Ultimately a compromise was reached, and the property was bought for $103,000, and some of the walls remain.

The front part of the recreation building that is now there was originally built in 1933 for tuberculosis patients, and was named the Mt. Lukens Sanitarium, after the mountain behind La Crescenta. It operated as a sanitarium for over 10 years.

Beyond the walls that he left, nothing else seems to be known about Milton Hofert. The cache is located by where his house was when he lived on the property. Thanks to the Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley for the history!
They are still interested in any information that anyone might have about Mr. Hofert.
