Geocache Description:

A small log-only cache close to a historic train station / museum. Bring your own writing implement.

Please be respectful of the historic area around the cache as nothing needs to be disturbed to find it.

This can be a very active muggle area so you may need to be very stealthy or even come back at another time... use your judgement.

Please do not put any spoilers, hints, subtle text, or pictures that are hints in your logs. Thanks and have fun!

It seems that defunct railroad stations either end up as restaurants or repositories of local history. This one, in the one-square-mile village of Califon, has gone the local history route. Once a stop on the High Bridge Branch of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, the 1875 Califon station (built by town residents with their own money) sent iron ore, peaches, milk and other freight to northern New Jersey. In the 1940s the line briefly carried passengers. Today you can see some of the original station furniture, along with historic photos and antique uniforms donated by long-time residents. The museum is open the first and third Sundays in May through December from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.

The station is also a great jumping-off point for a short (or longer) hike or bicycle ride. The old track-bed is now a multi-county maintained scenic "rail trail" called the Columbia Trail. Oh, by the way... there are a number of varied caches hidden along the trail, spread over several miles, for those so inclined ;).
