Confluence Point: 800 South 800 West
History
Shortly after I started geocaching, I also became aware of the
Degree
Confluence Project. The project's aim is to have people visit
each of the integer degree intersections of latitude and longitude
on Earth, posting photographs and a narrative of each visit online.
The project describes itself as "an organized sampling of the
world".
According to
Wikipedia, "The total number of degree
confluences is 64,442, of which 21,543 are on land, 38,409 on
water, and 4,490 on the Arctic ice cap." The United States is home
to 1100 primary intersections and Utah has 19. As of 27 Jan 2008,
the following intersections remain to be visited and recorded on
the website:
- Alaska 204 of 226 intersections unvisited
- California 2 of 52 intersections unvisited
- Hawaii 19 of 21 intersections unvisited
- Oregon 2 of 33 intersections unvisited
- Washington 1 of 23 intersections unvisited
There is a buoy anchored in the Gulf of Guinea at 0°0°. The
visit to this site is still considered
"incomplete" due to the fact that the picure was taken from a short
distance of the intersection. Maybe you can be the first.
Salt Lake Valley Confluence Project
Since the streets of most cities in Utah are laid out in a grid
patter, I decided to adapt this project to our state. The first
phase of the project is centered on the Salt Lake Valley and will
be extended to other areas as time goes on. The adaptation that has
been made is as follows: Instead of mapping out every integer
intersection in the valley, I will only map out every like integer
intersection (e.g. 900 East and 900 South). Due to the origin point
being at the northern end of the valley, there are surprisingly few
of these. They are decreased further in number by the Avenues
following a smaller grid layout than the rest of downtown.
Expectations
Just as with the Degree Confluence Project, it is
expected that you take a picture of what you find at the
intersection. Surprise us with pictures of unique items or features
of that intersection. An added bonus would be to take a picture of
your GPSr at the posted coordinates displaying those
coordinates.
Post all pictures to the website as part of your log.
Since there were existing geocaches at some of the intersections,
the cache was placed as close as allowable by website rules. The
photo of the intersection should still reflect the intersection
itself, and not the cache coordinates.
As always, please exercise stealth when retrieving the cache. Be
aware of private property nearby. Above all, have fun!!.
Important Note: In the interest of safety, the caches were
not placed a the center of the intersection. In most cases, they
are located on one of the corners. Please do not attempt to play
tag with the automobiles in the intersections.
At no time will you be in harm's way when retrieving the cache. If
you know of any points I may have missed, let me know so that I may
place a cache there also.
Congrats to Lord Mot on the FTF!!!
| While on a recent maintenance run, it has come to my attention
that certain cachers are tearing the bottom off log sheets in my
caches. This is unacceptable behavior. If you are found to have
done this, your log will be deleted.
Please respect my efforts and other cachers and do not modify my
caches without my permission. |
A complete listing of all my cache series and individual caches can
be found on my website.

| August 1 by Mzblubrd (2026 found) One of the caches we found on a short midnight caching trip. TFTC, quick easy grab for us tonight. Pic will be in DaphM's log -- not much to see this late at night here -- tonight anyway.
[view this log] | July 29 by Chasing Blue Sky (1768 found) Actually spotted this one a little bit ago. I couldn't grab it that day because of muggles. Came back today and made the grab. I even found some materials for a future cache hide. TFTCSL.

| July 29 by AlexanderLuthor (65 found) Rode down to Redwood Road to a store called "Super Europa" to get this cheese from Denmark that I like. It's called "Piknik". Good stuff. I don't like caching during the day but decided to take a look. I was afraid that there would be neighbors kibitzing all about as this is a residential area. Not a problem. TFTC! SL
