A beautiful little oasis at Arkaroola Springs, just 4km off the
road to Paralana Springs.
According to the legends of the Adnayamathanha people, Akurra is a
giant snake who lived in Mainwater Pound.
One day he travelled to the plains looking for water. When he came
accross Lake Frome & Lake Callabonna, he drank them dry.
Because the water was salty Akurra became bloated and his trip back
to the ranges was very slow. As he went Akurra carved out the
gorges in which the creeks run. Where he stopped he created
waterholes.
The first of these waterholes is at Arkaroola Springs.
When we visited there was water in the springs and the area was
relatively green after a recent rain.
Arkaoola Springs is located just 4km off the Paralana Springs road.
However when placed this road was definately better described as a
4WD track.
Also keep in mind this is a very remote area and normal precautions
for remote area travel should be taken before visiting it. If you
become stranded it may be a long & hot wait for help!!
Cache is an ammo can, located a short scramble above the springs,
in a sheltered alcove, covered by rocks, overlooking the
springs.
Pick your ascent route wisely and it should be a relatively easy
find. Pick the wrong way and it will be 5 star terrain.
Terrain rating is based mainly on the remoteness of the location
and road access to the area.
We hope you enjoy this spectacular area when you visit
