This event is to help out all of those cachers whose eyes glaze
over when others start talking about about the more advanced
features of geocaching.com, GPS software, tools, and gadgets that
can make Geocaching more fun and enjoyable. If you are a veteran
cacher, this is a great event to share and show your tips and
tricks you've developed in your travels, and maybe figure out that
last nagging tech problem.
If you can, it would be best to bring your own laptop computer
and connect to the onsite WiFi so you can follow along on your own
computer to try out some geocaching.com features and software you
may not be familiar with!
The first event will be held in our basement, and we will
hopefully have a data projector to make it easy for everyone to see
the presentations. We will have some snacks for everyone, but
please bring your own beverages. Depending how many people post a
"Will Attend", we may need some additional chairs and/or
tables!
Here's a brief overview of the topics that will be covered:
Premium Geocaching.com
features
-
Bookmark lists: Private, Public, Watch, how to edit,
etc.
-
Pocket queries: How to filter caches by types, location, and
"caches along a route"
-
Beginner's GSAK: Customizing cache information, and
transferring GPX's to GPS models that can't do it natively.
Cache Statistics, and Editing your
Geocaching.com Profile Page
-
Demonstration of a few free programs to look at your caching
statistics, and how to post it to your geocaching.com profile for
all to see.
-
How to further customize your profile page (Very basic HTML
editing).
Open Floor
Software
Here is a list links to some of the software and web sites that
will be discussed during this event if you wish to partially
familiarize yourself beforehand. I will likely be updating
this list occasionally.
