Geocache Description:

A bit of Route 66 History

Oklahoma has the more miles of Route 66 still in use than any other state, here is one of its gems. Provine Station - as it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is a two story gas station built in 1927 and one of few left in existence today. The second story provided living space for the owner and a covered patio for the gas pumps. The five unit hotel was added a couple of years later. Carl and Lucille Hamons bought the Provine Station and five-unit hotel in 1941 and renamed it Hamons' Court. Countless stories are told of how Lucille provided food to hungry travelers with no money or a free place to stay in the hotel when their cars broke down. This earned her the title "Mother of the Mother Road". When construction of Interstate 40 in the area was completed in 1962, access to Hamons' Court was cut off and the couple closed the motel. Lucille fought heartily for an exit to their business, and when told by the state that they were trying to get rid of these small places along the highway, she fought even harder. Upon Carl's death in 1971, Lucille changed the name to what it is know as today. Lucille's became famous locally for having ice cold beer and a live monkey. Lucille was inducted into the Route 66 Hall of Fame at the age of 84 in 1999, and passed away the next year having lived on Route 66 for 59 years. The original Hamons' Court sign was than shipped to the Smithsonian Institute in 2003. This cache is near Lucille's Route 66 station. Placed with the owner's permission.
