Geocache Description:

Welcome to the “Gem of the Oregon Coast,” a small, walking village tucked up against Cape Perpetua that has interests for all ages. One interest is that it is ideal for Geocaching and since it is home to YahotsWalker and BirkieHiker, we have populated the historical places, the walking trails, and best of all the beautiful view sites with caches! We welcome and invite you to enjoy our village and its fun places to walk and hike while caching.

And now a little history (BirkieHiker’s forte!) of this beautiful natural area along the Central Coast. The coastal area was populated by a number of Native American tribes that fished, hunted, and raised crops and left interesting “shell middens” in various places around Yachats. At one time, it served as a reservation area and was opened up to the Euro-Americans who discovered it as an ocean side get-away with a view. Thus, until 1917, it was called Oceanside. The name was changed to Yachats and the name has many meanings but all refer to the area where the Yachats River (a catch & release stream for cut-throat trout) runs into the Pacific Ocean. At one time there was a large smelt run along the beach and especially at Smelt Sands State Park. There continues to be the Smelt Feed each July with “imported” smelt for the event. There are many walking/hiking trails and a very active Volkswalkers group in the village that holds several large events each year. The wetlands behind the Commons, the center for many activities, is kid and handicap friendly and provides an interesting walk to the beach. Many other points of interest may be found by checking out the descriptions of the caches within the village. This lovely and well designed welcome sign area was developed and built by the folks at the Angel Job Corps camp just north of Yachats. Please respect the landscaping and do not trample the plants. The cache container is a medium sized, round container covered in natural camouflage and has room for swag. NOTE: The container is in the back of the landscaped area (up a small incline) on the north side and it is NOT necessary to dig into the main landscaping or go onto private property to get the cache.
