Rickwood Caverns is a recognized member of the National Caves Association, and offers more than a mile of living geology. The caverns themselves were water-formed during the Mississippian period over 260 million years ago. Rickwood Caverns still contains active "living formations," as mineral-laden water droplets build colorful structures and flowstones. Rickwood Cave reveals that it was carved from an ocean bed - shell fragments and fossils of marine life are clearly visible along the cavern ceiling and walls. Many curiosities are featured on guided tours of the "miracle mile" at Rickwood Caverns State Park.

Experience the thrill of Rickwood's miracle mile of underground caverns! The 260 million-year-old limestone formations, blind cave fish and underground pool are just a few of the natural wonders exhibited in the colorful cavern. The park features an Olympic-size swimming pool, snack bar, picnic area, large and small picnic shelter, hiking trails, playground, campground and gift shop.

The current park hours are from 8:00 A.M. to dusk, unless you are staying overnight camping in the park.

GPS was slightly off, but still managed to find and sign. This was the first of many finds in the park today. Not an ideal day for being outside, but we bundled up and put on our walking shoes. TFTF

What a hoot! While searching for this one I saw a dead squirrel right where the cache should be. Didn't let that stop me. Poked him with a stick just outta curiosity while I was there. I looked and looked. No Joy. Went back to the car and read the other cachers notes. The last one noted a dead woodpecker they found....so I knew I was in the right place. I must assume they both had the same grizzly fate. After finding a couple more in the park I wandered back over there for another look...and sure nuff, the squirrel was still there. AND SO WAS THE CACHE!!!! It had fallen off it's perch (not unlike the squirrel) and was lying on the ground (again, not unlike the squirrel). I signed the log and placed it back to one of the few possible places (Just the cache, not the squirrel). Hopefully it will stay (as the squirrel will for a time).
