Take the Blue Ridge Trail to the 2868 elv. Fiske Peak. This strenuous hike will award you with great views of not only the distance horizons but also of wildlife and wildflowers. The Blue Ridge was named for the bluish color from the blue oaks and of all the chaparral on the mountain. Time your hike well. The summer heat can reach over 100 degrees. The winter rains can make the trail very muddy and slippery. Not recommended for small children.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS THE LOW WATER BRIDGE IF FLOODED
An early morning start has worked best for me. The trail starts to climb almost right away following a creek through woods where poison oak does rule sometimes sticking out over the trail. So stay on the trail and keep an eye out for PO. After about .6 miles the trail opens up with great views. Another 1.5 miles and the climb really gets rough and steep but can be done as long as you avoid the mud and heat. After 3 miles all the bad stuff is behind you. And at about 4 miles you’ll reach Fiske Peak.
There is a summit register which you may sign. THIS IS NOT THE CACHE. You will be looking for a small ammo can. A photo hint is provided.
Expect about an 8 mile 5 hour round trip hike. But believe me – it will be worth it. Just don’t forget your camera.
Hazards: falling, poison oak, ticks, snakes, mountain lions, poison mushrooms, heat, dehydration – all the things you can expect when in a remote wilderness.
