Geocache Description:

Giggleswick Scar is a series of long limestone cliffs which were formed by the Craven Fault and which run along the route of the A65 (prior to the construction of the Settle by-pass), between Giggleswick and Buckhaw Brow. The cliffs of Giggleswick Scar are shrouded in trees which disguise the significance of the Scar as an important geological feature. The upper reaches contain several interesting caves including, Kinsey Cave, Spider Cave, Moth Cave and Wall Cave.

The cache can be reached by paths from the Settle/Giggleswick/Stackhouse road or on the delightful path from the parking area, opposite Scar Top Garage at the top of Buck Haw Brow (additional waypoint). Please see my Smearsett Scar Cache listing for a guide to a great 8.5 mile walk taking in several caches on the way. The cache is in a shallow box hidden near the path about 120 metres away from Schoolboys Tower, a large low stone tower marked as a cairn on some maps. For centuries it has been a tradition for every new boy at Giggleswick School [founded 1507], to carry a stone up the scar to place upon Schoolboy Tower. This is how this monument has been built over hundreds of years and in it are the stones of its old boys, including those placed by men whose lives were cut short in The Great War, and other conflicts. A few metres to the west is a similar, smaller tower which is known at the school as Schoolgirls' Tower, being the result of a similar tradition started when girls were first admitted to Giggleswick School.
