I encourage caching by public transport. Take the Northern Line
to Hampstead, walking distance from there should be about
1km. Alternatively, Bus 210 from Archway to Hampstead
Heath:Spaniards Road will take you within about 1/2km of the cache.
The cache is also directly off one of the main cycling routes
through the heath!
Hampstead Heath
Hampstead Heath is North London's largest and probably most
important green space. The wildest of London's parks has fields to
run in, long grass to roll in, woods to hide in and, most famously,
ponds to swim in. In north London this is THE place to get back to
nature. Strewn with picnickers, cyclists, families and the rest,
the heath is large enough and has enough copses, hills and mounds
that a quiet spot is never far away.
The Viaduct
In the 19th century, the Lord of the Manor of Hampstead, Sir
Thomas Maryon Wilson, planned to build 28 villas in the area east
of here. He built a viaduct over a swampy valley for a carriage-way
to access this area.
Fortunately, his attempts to develop these plans were foiled,
although the viaduct remains and the swampy valley was later
drained to form an ornamental pond. The Viaduct was built between
1844 and 1847, and was known as Wilson's Folly, as Wilson had
failed to obtain Parliamentary authority for the enclosure of his
land.
The Cache
You're looking for a small camouflaged plastic box that will
hold some small swaps and TBs. The viaduct is usually muggle
central on weekends if the weather is good, but the cache is
slightly off to make it a bit protected from muggles - some stealth
may still be required. Please take care to
replace and cover the cache so that it can't easily be seen by
muggles!
Take note of the letter and number under the lid for the
bonus cache.
Original Cache contents: Logbook, pen, an England keyring and a
TB.
Wheelchair Users
There's a good path (partly muddy when wet) passing over the
viaduct. Access to the cache is from there over a steep, overgrown
and narrow path about 10-15m down, so a helper will probably be
needed to retrieve the cache.
