Geocache Description:

Ninety minute climb up Goatherd Mountain from Lowell Lake.

Located deep in the pristine wilderness of the Alsek River, this cache is for those voyageurs that love the rugged glaciated topography of the Northwest. Plan on a ten to fifteen day trip on this spectacular river that reaches the sea at Glacier Bay, Alaska. The climb involves some rock scrambling and pushing through alders and willow, but mostly just alpine meadow walking up a trail shared by mountain goats and grizzlys. Wildflowers grow in profusion and hawks and falcons can be seen riding the thermals. Cache elevation is around 3725 feet. Bring water and lunch as well as foul weather gear. From the cache you will see Mt. Hubbard, Mt. Alverstone, Mt. Kennedy and possibly Mt. Cook and countless unclimbed, unnamed peaks of the St. Elias Range, as well as Lowell Glacier calving huge bergs into Lowell Lake beneath Goatherd Mtn. Be aware that this is very sensitive habitat for plants and animals and please have a care not to disturb the goats that may be grazing or resting nearby. Keep an eye out for grizzlies - this is their range, not yours.
