caching in and around the East Coast.

This Canada's first Geocache and is located about 30 minutes from Halifax on a major highway. It is not difficult, but is meant to attract people using one of our main routes in NS. It is only a few minutes walk from the highway and is in a LARGE ammo can. Take some fly dope !!! This cache was originaly named GC41 but was relisted as GCBBA when caches were taken out of the (GC.com) site admin account and given to individuals. A typing error also occured at that time. The date of 28 Jun 2000 was changed to 18 Jun 2000. The date has been corrected to reflect the original cache placement date of 28 Jun/00. On 24th June/06 a geostone giving the details and co-ordinates of GCBBA was unveiled at an Event at Graves Island Provincial Park. The geostone is near the Administration Building in Graves Island Park, which is about 7 Km west of this site on Highway #3. A short drive, with easy access to the Park. This geostone was built and designed by Wallace_River. The sale of "Canada's First Geocache" geocoin paid for the Event. Still in the works is plans for a plaque to be placed at the actual site of GCBBA. C A U T I O N - For some time now I have been suspicious that someone has been removing geocoins from this site. I recommend that anyone wanting to have a coin visit this cache to just "drop" it, and remove right away.

Found under cover of darkness after a visit to Graves Island to see the monument. I set this up so that this would be my 900th cache milestone. I certainly wasn't disappointed by the location, the adventure or the cache. It's great to touch a special bit of the history of our little game. And to have the fun of scrambling around in the woods after dark! TFTC:)

We were just out with friends @ graves Island park and saw the stone monument to Canads first Geocache. Our friends were muggles and did not know about caching at all so we put the coordinates in the gps & went searching. Found it and our friends (Joanne & Elliot) were impressed. So maybe Geocacher converts. We took the travel bug 'Callisto' and will pass her on quickly. Thanks for the cache

I am visiting Halifax with my family for a wedding. They like sleeping in, so while they sleep I go geocaching. When I was facebooking about my trip to Halifax the guy who got me interested in Geocaching facebooked me about this cache. So it a early morning trip to this cache. Further More its #350

Stop at the side of the ramp and walked back to see if I could find a spot to cross the "river" (its pouring rain right now). I jumped over the river and climb up into the forest as I walk to the GC I came upon a trail right to the cache. Signed the log and grabbed the only TB in the cache. So I followed the trail back to the ramp and when I came out I was only 25m from my car. To bad I didn't walk 10m further when I walked in.

The first cache in Canada... very cool! To celebrate we decided to release our Nova Scotia Jaspa the Journeyer coin here. However, knowing the likelihood of it getting stolen from this cache, we immediately picked the coin back up again and dropped it off in a nearby cache (A Quick Exit #6 - GCMD4X) that is hopefully more secure... Unfortunately, we forgot to write down the tracking number of our own coin, so we can't actually log this move! How dumb to we feel?! TFTC.

This is an awesome week for this cache, 3 Manitobans is such a short time. Today it was typical maritime weather lots of rain, added to the experience of finding this great find. It is located in a very beautiful spot. This marks our 101st cache & our first find here in NS. 1/4 of the PilotMounders was born & raised here in NS so it was a treat for my wife & I to find this together in the rain. Thank you Ken for this treasure, dropped TB 79NC13 as he belongs in this location because of the saying on his back. Come on down Manitoba keep the invasion alive :D

Greetings from Northeast Ohio!!

I’m on a roadtrip through Acadia National Park in Maine then up through the Canadian Maritimes. The scenery has been gorgeous all through the area!

I got up this morning in Acadia. In the morning I took the Cat over to Yarmouth. From there I drove to Halifax. Nova Scotia is a beautiful place.

I really like the older caches. I've found several year 2000 ones and make special trips to them. They are usually better ones, being out in the woods with a nice walk. Kind of like this one. I ended up bushwacking in. That made for an interesting trip as the understory was pretty thick. I found the cache easily and then found the trail.

Thanks,
Goat Haunt

It's been a long day today. Twenty caches so far but now we're ready for one more. Our 5000th cache.
We managed to get over the water and followed the well worn path leading into the cache. It would be very hard to miss a cache this big. There were no travel bugs or geocoins in the cache. Too bad I didn't read the description or we would not have left our geocoin. Too late now. Maybe the creep who is stealing all the travelers will finally grow up and get a conscience.
I wish that we could have spent more time reading some of the many logs in the three log books that are there.
Thanks to Ken Kane for placing this cache back in May of 2000; only 25 days after Dave Ulmer placed his historic stash.

When the family started to plan vacation this year, I thought that we should come by and check out the first cache in Canada- then we ran into some local cachers (the Kane Family) who told me that their Uncle Ken was the person who put out the first cache - now it was a must that we go to find it - we arrived the day after the post-sub-tropical-storm Danny came through so there was a bit of water to contend with before the find - we did find a way into the cache and a short while later the cache was in hand - we then worked our way back to the truck and off to Graves Island Provincial Park to get our picture with the monument - thanks for putting out that first cache for all of us to enjoy and thank you for the milestone - this cache was find #900

1120 - Once I heard how close this cache was to Halifax, I made my brother drive out here to grab the cache when I came down to visit.
We were in a hurry, and my brother waited in the car as I dashed in. I didn't see the trail, so I bushwacked in and managed to fall and smash my knee. I limped the rest of the way to the cache, signed the log, took some pictures, and limped out on the path.
Thanks for starting Canada off - my knee won't let me forget this cache anytime soon

When we heard that this cache was in Nova Scotia, we knew that we had to find it on our next trip down. We decided to combine the trip with a day at Peggy's Cove. This cache also ended up being elsa57's 1000th cache, when she was getting close to 1000, she decided this would be a great cache for a 1000 milestone. We luckily had been given a tip off as to where the trailhead was and found it easily and made the short walk to GZ. This was the second biggest ammo can we've found so far. We are visiting from Newfoundland and decided to do this geocache...it being the first in Canada. Despite the rain, we walked up the trail and found the cache...such a pretty spot. We took a travel bug, left a geocoin that we had found in Alberta last month, and signed the log. The cache is in great shape!! Thanks so much for starting up geocaching in Canada...we get so much pleasure from the hunt!!

Later this week we travelled to Graves Provincial Park and had our picture taken by the monument remembering the 1st cache in Canada.
Thanks so much.

When we decided that we were coming to The Maritimes, I knew I had to visit this cache. Funnily enough, I had just picked up a "Canada's First Cache" geocoin yesterday, and brought it here. Because of the geocoin theft warning, I did not leave it. That was quite the geotrail to the cache. It's almost ready for stone dust or paving.

Took and left nothing, dipped the Canada's first coin, and signed the log.
Thanks for the cache!

We have found oldest existing caches in 14 U.S. states and this is our first Canadian province. Perfect that it should also be Canada's oldest. We followed the footsteps of numerous others to the hide. Duos Perquisitor, NH, USA.

Found at 13:39 p.m. today while on vacation to this lovely province from the military in Trenton, Ontario.
16 days to tour the entire province was not enough, but the memories will last forever and the little tuck away places I visited were worth it all.
While taking a picturesque leg stretch in to this little picnic site comes another vehicle, some people jump out and in their hands is...of course a GPS. I asked if they were caching, and sure enough they were. kares and his grampa nswiggy. Then I went and got my GPS and looked to see if I had it in mine. Yep I did so off I went. We chatted a bit then they drove off. Next thing I know they doubled back to ask if I knew that Canada's oldest cache was nearby. Well now I knew it was in the province but had no idea if I had it in my GPS or for that matter I never knew I was that close to it. So we checked my GPS by GC number and I was good to go. Thanks so much to nswiggy for the info. Great to have fellow cachers like that who are willing to help and give you a heads up that there are caches nearby.
The mosquitoes could have carried me away in here, but I beat them back as I figured the cache was more important so I sacrificed some O- to their mighty voracious appetites.
Discovered the Arctic Expedition TB, as I work on CC130 Hercules aircraft here in Trenton, I should have taken the airplane and brought it here to Ontario with me, but I too the geo coin instead, but then that was a wrong move as the coin just left Ontario. Oh what's a girl to do? Had a great time doing this cache and discovering the Provincial Park nearby that has a plaque dedicated to this cache. So I of course stopped there and found another cache do while I was in that park. Oh what a day....caching and exploring, just doesn't get any better.

Had a great visit to the many little fishing villages and harbours on my travels around the Cape Breton Highlands Trail and South shore of the entire province. In and out of all the little coves and harbours and fishing villages. Then on to Peggy's Cove and the Swiss Air 111 disaster memorial park.

Thanks and Happy Caching from freshair4me Trenton Ontario.

How could we come to Nova Scotia and miss this cache ? We were in Peggys Cove and stopped to do this one quickly. I didn't find the trail on my way in, so i had to bushwack and felt down while walking on a fallen tree. That wouldn't stop me tho.

I took the Arctic Expedition Plane travel bug and no other bugs were in the cache, altough there are a lot listed here.

Thanks for this historic hunt. We loved it so much we came back two days later on our way home to get some pictures. I forgot the camera on my first visit...

While visiting NS on vacation, this cache was on our hit list (for obvious reasons: Canada's First!)

We noted that 5 TB's and one coin that are listed in the cache's inventory are not present. :o( Plus, one that we found has been missing from Ontario, so we straightened that one out easily and left it in this cache! :o)

We decided to take several TB's and geocoins to a new change of scenery: back home to Newfoundland!

Thanks to you - the cache owner and creator of Geocaching! Who knew that a simple idea would lead to such a significant hobby around the world! Congrats!!!!

Found with TamiMaRo. I was only in Halifax for a couple days visiting family so I made a short list of 3 caches including this traditional cache that I just had to get done. Unfortunately I had to make the find in the rain but I wasn't going to let it a little rain get in my way.

Surprised to see another Kingston, Ontario cacher make the find just 4 days earlier.

Mr. Cyberchaser's cell phone rang as he was logging this historic cache, so he told the people calling him from Victoria where he was and they were (we hope) suitably impressed. This was our last of the day, so we just dipped a couple of TBs in the cache and got out of the rain. TN. Thanks for Canada's first cache!

I was vacationing with the family in nearby Hubbards and when I found out that the first Geocache in Canada was nearby I had to make time for a quick find. Unfortunately I did not have time for more extensive caching expedition. Perhaps another time. Given the note that TB's seem to be disappearing from the cache I did not want to leave a Jeep TB that I was carrying, but I will "dip it" nonetheless. I did leave a small Simba flashlight and took a toy motorcycle. Thanks for keeping this cache alive, and for kicking things off in Canada. pdunn

Woo Hoo! We finally made it to 2000 finds and that was our goal. Funny that our geocaching "career" should end where geocaching in Canada began, but it is poetic.

Over the last 2000 finds we have seen some fantastic and imaginative setups and hides (binthair, Kirok, mlord, model12, El Nimrod, Bibbits, Digital Exposure, JF&C, dutchmaster, RitchieD, The Fossils, Zartimus, Traveling Buddy, amongst many others. We have also met many fine people in our travels and "thundering herd", mini-mob, splitters and SOBs outings. Special thanks go out to DnD who was my regular geo-partner and Charlie.

As me, Magoo and Charlotte the Wonder Dog now go into geocaching semi-retirement, we will be concentrating on looking at more of the scenery vice the GPSr, completing our "grid" and finding only the most challenging, difficult and interesting caches.

We will probably take the "Mattawa approach" and log our finds somewhere in the same decade, maybe.

This was my 4th cache -- it's great to have such a momentous spot so close to home! It was a nice, easy spot to find. The trail is pretty worn, probably due in part to the 9th anniversary celebration on the weekend.

the hardest find today was locating my son after the Great Big Sea concert in halifax last night - found him around 1:30 and away we went (photos to follow)

he made me turn around right after this find and i never saw the plaque or looked for the many other caches in this area - so ill be back for sure - this spot is way wilder than i expected after looking at the satellite images

Shadowfax10 and geodog Oz accompanied three of the SaucyMary4 on their first visit to Canada's first geocache. The snow was deeper than expected since the ground was bare in Halifax and we naively expected the same would be true in Lunenburg County. Nope. Nonetheless, we slogged through with a 10 and 6 year-old to find the cache ammo box frozen into the tundra. A little nudging with a tree limb, though, and the box was free. Geocaching with children is a real treat as you see their faces light up as if it were Christmas morning. I took a tiny green dinasaur and left a solid pressed glass iridescent sun (about the size of a loonie). The girls took a yellow pencil and sewing kit and left a nice carabinier (spelling?). When I was first here, there were a "Canada's first geocache" pin to take home, but they must all be gone by now. It was a good idea, though, since this is such a special cache. I'd be willing to contribute a few bucks to see that more are made, so let me know if I can help. TFT(first)C.

We've been planning to go from Halifax to Bridgewater for a couple of weeks, and we knew we were going past this cache - Canada's oldest - so we definitely wanted to stop in and get it! Fortunately the weather cooperated.

Terrain is not a 1. It's pretty easy once you get about 20m in, but the first 20m are a slog.

Easy find though; we tried to add a bit more camo to the hide, but weren't particularly successful.

Took a lion and left a pelican.

"Dropped" our TB's and GC's, then picked them up again.

I am on a quest to find the oldest active cache in all the Canadian provinces. Yesterday I did New Brunswick's and today here in Nova Scotia, which is also the FIRST cache in Canada. I completed the oldest active caches in the 50 states last month so will now concentrate on Canada. I think I have just two left, Nunavut and the Northwest Terretories but these two will be very difficult to get. I also went to see the geostone and waymark placed to honor this cache. I will drop and retrieve the Original Stash Geocoin which I have had with me for some time. I planned to leave it here but see that is not a wise choice so will bring it back to NH and leave it there somewhere. I went in the hard way and came out the easy way which is my usual method of caching!! Thanks to all who keep the historical caches alive- they are the best.

There is a well worn trail up the hill to this cache from all the visitors over the last 8 years. I brought Vroom Vroom TB Racer for a visit to the cache as this was his intended destination, however after reading the advice of the cache owner I decided not to leave him here so I will drop him off at another cache soon.

Tanglebones has described our day well, so I won't re-hash. I will only say that this is now a sentimental favourite cache for me. It was not only a milestone cache for my GPL (I'd been holding onto that coin for what felt like *forever* waiting for him to hit 200!); it was also wonderful to visit this piece of history in the pastime that brought us together. In addition to all that, it was among the caches we did on our first (of what we hope will be many) geo-vacation together. It is fitting, of course, that we completed this cache in our usual way - the tough way going in.

Thanks so much for keeping this very special cache alive.

I can't believe I forgot to log this cache - considering it was my 200th find and I was given a beautiful gift by the woman I love in celebration. Bah, I'm such an airhead at times...

We were in Charlottetown on our first geo-vacation and decided to travel down to Halifax specifically to get this cache. I spent 25 years living there and only discovered geocaching just before moving to Ottawa for a new life.

After breakfast in the morning, we headed along the 103 to the appropriate spot. As always, we found what was probably the wettest route to the cache (just a few feet from what turned out to be the driest, naturally) and once at GZ it was a quick find. We found the cache partially open and missing a travel bug the listing said should be there, but the contents of the cache were dry and apparently unharmed. We had intended to leave a CF Geocoin there but changed our minds after reading the description.

At GZ, Garmin Gal, my beautiful Geo-Partner For Life, surprised me with a shiny new Planisphere geocoin for achieving this astounding milestone...ah...over three years since I started caching. (So sue me, I'm "thorough"...) The coin is now in my inventory and will go with us wherever we travel.

Thanks for the piece of history, and thanks for maintaining this for so long. Most enjoyable.

We were in Halifax visiting friends and doing the tourist thing for a day. Just had to take a drive out of town to get this. Really cool spot. As often happens, we didn't find the trail until we got to the cache area. So this was really about a terrain 3.5 in and WAY easier getting out. There were a ton of TBs in the cache, so we took a bunch of them since we are traveling to help them get on their way. We felt that, with so many TB's there, some of them had probably been there for a while.

I'm glad the cache is large, as part of this trip I collected 33 travel bugs to bring out east - and left ALL of them in this cache. This was the toughest 90m bushwalk I have ever done in my life...the vegetation was so dense and lots of spiders and cob webs. It seemed to take forever to get through that 90m of bush. Once we got through that, we found the cache easily and took pics. Found the trail then and followed that back out to the road very easily and noticed that we parked about 40m further past the trail head which we couldn't spot. It was good to get out here to the maritimes and find the first cache ever placed in Canada. Also enjoyed seeing the cache owner at the Mega Event a couple weeks later in Quebec City.

We didn't know where the plaque was commemorating this cache, so we couldn't visit it, but we were curious why it wasn't near the cache's location?

Cache doesn't need maintenance; it needs RAID! Got here real early, for me, on Monday morn in search of the "I" coin that JWID left behind. Got skunked because "bert and ernie" had been here Sunday and grabbed that coin. There were no TB's or coins remaining, so I had to add just one... a non-trackable that belongs in Lunenburg County anyway. Also put in some packs of fly dope "RAID" and a doggie toy. Dropped my Key TB (for the mileage) and then grabbed it back. SLTFTC

We made it!

Found it today while visiting Dartmouth and heading out to Peggys Cove.

Beautiful day, and the bugs were not too bad today either. We saw a frog on the way up to the cache.

Traded TBs and left a special copper "I" Found It personal geocoin since "I" found this on himself.

We meant to do this one yesterday as we drove into Halifax, but we completely forgot about it then. But we couldn't be this close and miss it, so we did a bit of back-tracking today to visit it. Nice big ammo can, mosquitoes, a bit of swampyness at the start of the well-worn trail: a quintessentially Canadian caching experience!

Launched our personal CREW geocoin from this illustrious starting point, too. Thanks for placing this bit of history, and keeping it up!

I wanted to drop off the Ernie TB sandal quickly after retrieving if from Hiroshima Castle in Japan. I checked the website when I got back to Canada and, unfortunately, the Bert TB matching sandal is still in Australia, so, actually, the Ernie TB was a lot closer in Japan to finding his sole-mate (pun intended). However, the original intent of the TB owner was for Bert and Ernie to meet somewhere in the middle between the Netherlands and Australia, so I guess Canada is in the middle. Hope this works. Anyway, I retrieved Buzz Lightyear TB while at the cache. As before, I appreciated the quiet clearing with the monolithic erratic granite boulders at this, Canada's first geocache. TFTC

Well I did it , find #1000 for me and my 1st one today at 6 am . Had Stuey with me , we were on our way to the Mcnutts Island event . I wanted to drop a coin here and of course I left it in the van and had to go back for it . Good thing to , as i'm walking back to the cache I found an explorist 500 hanging in a tree . I wonder who lost that So I put the coin in the cache and even retrieved a BRAND NEW COIN from the cache , from the cache owner ! WITH MY NAME ON IT ,TO ME FOR MY 1000 find ! Wow are you good . I'd like to thank the academy ,for giving me this and all the cachers and caches that made this moment possible , my wife and kids for there support in allowing me to spend all these hours on the hunt . My two dogs , lady and honey who have been there with me on many of the hunts and finally the insect repellent companys , without them this moment my never have happened So there really is a Santa Claus and his name is East River and yes it was my 500 hang on the branch . Thanks again for the cache , I have planed for this to be #1000 when I 1st found out about it . YEEEEEEE HAWWWWWW

A Fool and an Idiot's Tour Across Canada Stop #2
When I saw how close this was to where we going to be, this cache became a 'necessity'. I've visited the oldest in Washington State (home), the plaque for the first cache and the oldest in existence (Mingo) and now the first in Canada. Not much water flowing today, so the cross wasn't hard. Swapped a couple of TB's (and ran a whole bunch thru!). Thanks for the hunt.

Was looking forward to seeing the plaque but it must be buried under the snow, will have to come back sometime in the summer and add a picture then. Beautiful sunny day, if a bit chilly in the morning, but a very memorable day. We started off our TB, The Atlantic Beaver, at this cache. We thought it was fitting as he is Canada's symbol and hopefully will travel far and wide, spreading the Canadian spirit.

We bushwacked in failing to find the path, but came back out the path. Picked up a TB. TFTH TFTC

Again the GPS was behaving wonky in the woods, walked past the cache once or twice before spotting it. When I was here before, there were several "Canada's First Geocache" pins in the ammo box, but this time, none was to be seen. Almost 2 years ago, the Alien got me interested in Geocaching, but we've never had the pleasure of caching together. So, when i decided to come visit Halifax for a few days, caching was near the top of the agenda. And that Alien, she saved this cache for me. She's been past the area a million times, but she didn't look for it until today

So, with coordinates in hand, we came to the area. Of course, the coordinates were a degree of longitude off because i am a colossal moron who cannot copy down 15 digits correctly. But we figured out what i had done and decided the rest of the numbers were probably right. We also hadn't really looked at the cache page, so there was no little thumbnail map and no cache description, though we knew we were looking for something of a fairly decent size. So, with the bit of information we thought we had, we left the car at the carpool lot and started walking. And we had to cross a large highway. And we bushwhacked through a bunch of trees and moss as thick as carpet. Fortunately and uncharacteristically, i did not fall down any hills or into any holes.

Then we came to a more open area and the GPSrs told us we were near. And we found it. Canada's first geocache. Wow This historical cache was very, very cool and i'm glad the Alien saved it to do with me! Between the two of us, we left 2 TBs (one a Red Jeep), 2 Cleveland metroparks zoo keychains, 3 squished pennies, an alien sticker, 2 growing dinosaurs, bug stickers, and Canada bumper sticker. Good thing i wrote that down. And we took some TBs and the unactivated geocoin. Thanks for the cache and the bit of geo-history!!

Been wanting to find this cache ever since I did the research to determine if it was the first cache placed in Canada when I first started to volunteer for geocaching.com. Great time to reflect on my participation of this activity over the past 6 years of caching and over 4 years of being a volunteer reviewer. Its been an adventure, thanks for the cache!

Certainly a 'must-find' on our list too! Had the chance while on a camping trip from Ontario's Algonquin Highlands to Cape Breton's National Park Highlands - so we made the slight detour and found the cache at 14:30 hours today. Didn't find any of the listed four TB's - so we left yet another one to help fill the void. We left 'Dagda' - a 'Maritime' Geocoin who had been prowling around Riviere du loup, Quebec. His goal is to tour all the caches in the Maritimes - so he's back ! - and in the very first Canadian geocache too ! We took out the Sydney Casino Key-Chain and left the TB instead, and proudly signed the new log book.

I would rate this one a higher difficulty, but then again, I usually make things more difficult than they have to be. I started out in fine form, after rains had left a lot of flooding, by finding a nice place to enter the woods that wasn't too wet. But the bushwack in was pretty arduous from there. Cache was very easy to spot, and then it was time to head back to the car. I tried an easier route, then ran into a boulder field and emerged on the main highway instead of the on-ramp. After a brief moment of panic, I used reason and found my way back to the car. What an honor to find Canada's first cache!

As a geocaching mecca, this was a great and relatively easy find. We were driving back from Lunenburg and the Bluenose II(which to our suprise was in port as it was supposed to be away)we were checking some of the geo's that we had downloaded the night before and when we saw that this was Canada's first geo we had to get it, especially driving all the way from BC. It was raining on and off(not something that we don't know about) and we were not dressed for the hunt with flip flops, no rain gear and the umbrella back at the trailer, we fought our way through the wet bush and found the cache. Took nothing but signed the log and left Woody the Beaver from a Newfoundland cache going across Canada to see all the Provinces. We thought that this would be an exellent cache to visit. TFTH. Woodys tracking # is B1QACJ. He is well on his way now after leaving the rock!!

#500 at Canada's 1st geocache!!!

The terrain of this cache is definitely not a 1, as I had to ford a small creek, and climb a pretty substantial hill. However, once done, it was a very rewarding hike. I would put the terrain closer to a 2 or 2.5. Thank you to ava_ad0re for coaching me up the hill. The only handholding was to cross the creek.

Also thanks to junglehair and OHMIC for helping get the numbers behind my 500th find in such a small period of time. Team Stubby rules Nova Scotia!!!

#317

I have to thank Cyr for telling me about this cache. I was in Halifax and Charlottetown getting the Great White North Geotour caches and he mentioned that it would be good to get this one as well. Although, it was about 45 minutes in the opposite direction for me, but I had a few hours to kill before my flight back to Ottawa.
Like Shadowfax10 before me, when I first entered the area, the bush was thick and dirty. I figured, there is no way this is a 1/1. It took me 45 minutes to get to the area of the cache, only to stumble upon a beautiful trail that you could drive a truck on. I found the container and took a "First Cache" button and left an "Atlantic Canada Geocaching Society" button and a "Traveller2005 wooden token".
I took the trail out and it only took me 2 minutes to get to the road. D-oh!!! That's happened a couple of times to me... rough going in only to find a road going right to it. Oh well. That's part of the adventure.
Thanks for the great cache. It was an honour doing it.

Shadowfax 10 and 11 parked the car at the closest GPS reading (70 or so meters) but had to bush-whack in. Coming out, I found the easiest path leads directly to the red "WRONG WAY" sign post (drivers from Halifax will see the unpainted back of this sign, only). No bush-whacking required if you start from there. Great to visit the first geocache site in Canada --- only placed in the year 2000, but, my-o-my, how geocaching has grown in those last 7 years! Congratulations to Ken Kane for recognizing the potential of geocaching early on in the game. I liked the location, too, sort of Druid-esque with all those huge granite boulder erratics around. I was also surprised at the height of the hill, since I've driven past this forested "island" within the traffic circle many, many times. Lots of swag to choose from, but, since I'll be in Italy in three weeks, took the Diabetes Travel Bug "La Palma: USA" so it can have a European adventure in May. I also took a "first geocache in Canada" pin and left my favourite Canadian quarter (September 1999 issue).

Was up and on the trail to this cache very early in the morning. Located it at 4:35 a.m. Made it a night cache.
A very unique item to have in my possession now. It is the Mountain Goat Petroglyph. I left a Lunenburg County Geocachers Coin to take it's place. Thanks to Tsunrisebey for this and I will appreciate and honor your words. Also thanks to Islander for having placed it in this special cache, right on my way back to the city. Also thanks to eastriver for taking the time after work to follow me into the woods to ward off any 'sounds in the night' fears I might develop. Only got spooked a couple of times. What a great way to start the day... now off to bed to grab an hour or so sleep before the workday begins. This has been a great weekend for geocaching...two special items were picked up here by me. Well, today I finally completed a mission for tsunrisebey.

As anyone following the geocoin forums knows, tsunrisebey makes beautiful homemade geotokens out of... well, I'm not sure exactly what they're made out of. But she made some wonderful ones called the Petroglyph series that were sent to cachers to distribute far and wide, and I was lucky enough to get one to leave in Canada's first geocache. These are sought after tokens, and some lucky local cacher will be able to trade at GCBBA for one of them.

Thanks again Eastriver for giving us South Shore folks the privilege of having Canada's first cache in our back yard, and thanks tsunrisebey for letting me take part in distributing your work.

Brought my Family here so that the last member could visit where geocaching began in Canada and its very close to our home too.
I was surprised and thrilled when checking the cache logs to see there was a special Easter Egg here...and it being Good Friday ... how appropriate to pick it up. Took the high road into the cache..amazed at the rugged terrain. I don't think Tiggerlady and Oh God will follow me through the bush again. Tiggerman struck off on his own but rescued the others and left me to power my way out...got back to the car first though. Bon Don was keeping watch and was concerned at how long this trek took us but I was successful and retrieved the egg. Thanks Easter Bunny.

Our 100th find We wanted to save Canada's first cache for a milestone. Thanks Ken Kane very, very much for starting something that turned out to be a fun hobby for so many and a way of life for some. We took the BC lottery ticket and left the cost of the ticket ($2). By the way, the ticket was a loser. I admit winning a million would have made the day just a little more special. As with most, we bushwhacked in and took the easy stroll out. Thanks again Ken.

I've wanted to do this cache since the first time I heard about it. Well i couldn't be any closer though it was late, how hard could it be. HA, hard, first Cache Jordan was pretty drowsy as i drove around trying to find the closest way in. Which proved to also be the hardest way in. As I stepped across the little running water i fond out the moss/mud was NOT frozen on the other side as i dropped to midcalf in this crappy looking goo. Course someone had a good laugh and before i finally reached higher ground i had managed to get the other one partially in some more muck. Then on to the bush wacking portion, all teh while i'm thiking...how could it be here and then the woods thinned and there was the object of our search rght along a nice wide open trail. TFTC, even that is insuffiient, thanks for placing the first canadian cache close enough for us easterners to get.

It feels great to log Canada's First GeoCache as a find! Travelling with my non-geocaching Aunt, and convinced her that this would be a good cache to visit (she was getting tired of micros). We found two paths into the woods, and selected the one that crossed the narrowest section of the stream. Unfortunately, this meant we had a bit of an uphill bushwack ahead of us, which was a tough slog for my city slicker Aunt with arthritic ankles. We eventually made it to the cache, then discovered the well worn path leading back to the road. On this trail, getting to the stream was easy, getting my Aunt across it was a bit of a challenge. After a few encouraging words and a lot of well placed rocks we were both back on the road. Took two travel bugs, left three travel bugs, a Victoria geocaching bag, and a vigps.com geocoin. Thanks for the hide!

We found this one as we made our way, with friends, enroute to Risser's Beach for a camp overnight. Our idea of camping is tents, three tray dish washing, etc. Her idea is ceramic tea cups, running water in a camper van.

It was kind of neat to realise this was Canada's first cache only six years ago. We bushwacked through to find because athough we started in the right spot, we turned left instead of right looking for the trailhead.

We found the cache and took the trail out to our vehicles. Took a bike lock, roll of pennies, critters and ET figure. Left teacher nut, Canada bracelet, dog ball and pennies from heaven poem.

By the time we came out, our friend had KD all prepared in her camper van. Maybe we won't laugh at her idea of camping from now on.

Bluenose climbers had to visit the first geocache in Canada. Being new to geocaching I did not realize who East river was even when I met him at Rissers campout. I also was ignorant about the location of the first geocache in Canada. My fellow campers helped educate an ignorant fool. I had to visit this cache, read the posts and be thankful that I could visit this cache. I read the posts, looked at every thing in the cache and decided I should help Totem TB on his way. I did realize I was taking this cache too serious and left a woopie cushion to help other little cachers laugh. TFTC. Did I say "THANKS FOR THE first CACHE in Canada".

We had this particular cache - the first in Canada! - on our itinerary even before the airline tickets from SA had been purchased. Law officers were parked in sight of the tempting but dubious parking spot, so we found an alternative one not too far away. With PACT we chose the difficult walk in, but found the easy way out. Dropped and retrieved TBs. TFTC

I figured the first Canadian cache would be a good place to introduce some young (and not-so-young) family members to geocaching. Charlemagne was in charge of the GPS, ably assisted by Sophie, Ivan, Jack and Greg. Also Gwen, John and Gill, with me (perlodid) taking up the rear. We had hardly got there before we heard "Are we going to another one?" We did: GCT33D just across the road, GCT75T, GCQ548 and GCTZYT. Nice loop, I recommend it.

Well, this cache put a bit of a damper on our day. We were very excited to be able to go to Canada's first cache. We saw the difficulty rating of 1 and the terrain rating of 1 so we thought it would be a breeze. We found the exit loop but weren't sure where to park as there were no coordinates listed. We parked the car under the overpass and began looking for some sort of trail. After 20 minutes of searching we finally gave up and decided it wasn't worth bushwhacking in flip flops and shorts (see terrain and difficulty ratings).

Maybe if the description gave us a better idea of what to expect, we would have brought our machetes.

I have finally got this one off my list. The first cache in Canada.... so this is where it all started. The story of my life, beat through heavy bush, fall down and get dirty, yadda yadda yadda, only to get to the cache and find there is a perfectly good trail to follow out (and in if I had of looked better). Oh well, all part of the fun. Wanted to see the plaque but I didn't know where it was (wife only gave me a short time to spend caching before I had to be back).

This "geocache" should be named "One Wet Foot". I have never gone here and not got a soaker on one foot. I visited your cache today to drop off I Dream of Jeans TB and add some swag to the cache. I have visited this cache about 4 times so figured I would leave the GPS home. The Warden and I pull up alongside the moat, I get out and leave her in air-conditioned comfort while saying.. "be back in a minute." Like a gazelle, I leap the moat, well half of it. One Wet Foot. I begin bushwacking thru the thick bush thinking "the skeeters aren't too bad here, should I stop and put some bug spray on?" Naw, I'll be ok and strike out in a straight clockwise circle looking for the easy way in. After about 5 minutes I am peering thru the trees at the hi-way again thinking "wish I had my GPSr". I say to myself "you can't get lost in an exit ramp surrounded by pavement and a moat, can you?" Then I decide that I am too far west, so I head east for awhile, or at least long enough to step into a hole and twist my right knee...again! Ok, here's the trail ahead...good. Darn my knee hurts. Up the trail I go, like a gazelle...hot, thirsty and wondering if the Warden is bored yet in the cool air-conditioned car. Up ahead I see something black and moving near the cache site, but can't quite make it out. I limp on ...thinking, "I hope I don't have to run fast outta here." I get to the cache and open it. The log book is still slightly damp from the activity back on the rainy days. I begin to enter my log and suddenly there they are...the black things. Ten thousand mosquitoes!
While I try to write and take a quick look for any TB's to move along they hit me. Now I'm wacking myself hard, and bleeding profusely with every smack. Gotta get the heck outta here fast...toss in the new TB and some new swag, can't find any TB's to move out. Quickly put away the log, replace the cache and start to run like a ...gazelle? Ouch...my knee hurts. Back down the trail to the hi-way, and leap the moat in only 2 attempts! Hobbling back to the air-conditioned car, I can't help but wonder if the skeeters may have placed Canada's 1st Geocache; it's like take-out food delivered to them. The Warden sits waiting for me and says "got lost eh? I told you.. you should have brought your Garmin." I say, "No...I got chased by big black things, I think they were bears!" ;) TFTC eastriver...PS That "special thing" is still there...ouch, did I tell you ..my knee hurts.

This is the first cache to be protected by a water-filled moat! (Could be all the rain we're getting lately...even the animals are starting to march in two by two) Managed to jump the brook and brave the 'skeeters to deliver TB Adventure Ducky from Boulder, Colorado to the 1st Canadian Geocache to continue on his adventure. He attended the 6th Anniversary event yesterday at Graves Island and even had his picture taken with Ken Kane, the guy who started all of this fun in Canada. It was a great day for ducks and Adventure Ducky and his little buddy enjoyed the event. Maybe he'll be back this way again some day. Today I stopped primarily because this week I got my Canada's 1st Cache gecoins that celebrate this spot, and I wanted to launch my first one here. I also dropped off another TB so it could see of the oldest cache in Canada. TFTC!

This was our 25th find and we were all proud to have found it. Unfortunately, 2 of the 7 sail had just returned from Cub Camp and wasn't up for this cache, so he waited in the van while the rest of the crew searched. The oldest told the pic, and the rest just cheesed!!

We took a bunch of stuff & left a wack of stuff. When there's this many kids on a find the rooting is a site for sore eyes!
We lost our marbles again (1 large marble for the 25th find).

We also took the Bears to Dive TB. I hope the TB owner enjoys the visit this TB had at the first geocache in Canada.

Came in to check the cache and to add a few new items. Looks like I need a new container. Soon as it warms up a little bit. Man it was cold today with the wind hard out of the North. Took the MGA coin to pass down the shore, southward.

Hi eastriver; I stopped by today at 1430hrs to drop off a Bug (Car 54) and to add a few new items to your cache. LEFT 2 TY rabbits and a TY doll. I hope the rabbits behave themselves in there. ;-) TOOK a purple necklace. Nice day for caching, sunny and cold -5 Celsius. Tomorrow they're forecasting a Nor'easter, 20mm of snow and high winds. The cache won't be so easy to get to then. Parked in the right spot this time and never got my feet wet X-ing the moat. Dem tings are so much easier the second time 'round. LOL, The Cache is in good shape. Cheers, Tucats
