"Prairie Sailors"

WELCOME TO NESS LUTHERAN CEMETERY in Grand Forks County

A short time after the settlement of Grand Forks County had begun; the community of Mekinock was founded. Along with their farmhouses and barns, the settlers built stores, schools, and churches. One of the first of these was the Ness Lutheran Church. Founded in 1877 the congregation has met at this location ever since.

Shortly after the church was built the grounds surrounding the building were used as a cemetery. Some of the first markers date to the early 1880’s. At least one dates to before 1877. Often the pioneer graves would be move from the homestead or other burial sites to a churchyard once it was built.

The cemetery contains the graves of several veterans. Two such veterans are Eugene Warren Ross and George Warren Ross. Eugene Ross served in the Navy during the World War I, while his son, George Ross, served in the Navy during World War II. Here on the Dakota Prairie two sailors, father and son, rest side by side.
