Where to Start
This cache is a Letterbox Hybrid. Park at the coordinates (for the nearby parking area) and then follow walking directions to find the cache. It is not a far hike, but is on single dirt track, and also requires some short uphill. I've tried to avoid areas of heavy undergrowth or poison ivy, but there are steep-ish areas and downed logs to cross. A magnetic compass is required; all bearings are to magnetic north (no conversion to true north required).
- Park in the turnout, cross the road, enter the gate.
- Take the rightmost path, and stay on it until you come to the second shagbark hickory tree that is located immediately to the right side of the trail (close enough to literally touch while standing on the trail). This tree is approximately 315 steps from the gate. Shagbark is unique because the bark looks like it is peeling off... here is a photo of the actual tree you are walking to.
- From the tree, walk 20 steps at bearing 175 degrees to a double-trunked tree.
- From this tree, walk 52 steps at bearing 123 degrees to a double-trunked tree. (noticing a pattern?)
- Walk 59 steps at bearing 184 degrees. Then 47 steps at bearing 200 degrees. Then 10 steps at bearing 78 degrees to the cache location!
The Cache
Letterboxes have stamps that remain inside, and are used for the finder to stamp their own logbook... if interested, plan ahead to bring some paper and use the armadillo stamp in the letterbox. If you have your own stamp for the logbook, please upload a pic as I would love to see it.
