This cache is one in a series dedicated to amazing & unusual organisms. I am astounded by the amazing diversity of plant and animal life that exists in this world. But the real fascination lies with those organisms that are amazing, unusual and odd.

These organisms have capabilities that we do not share and can barely imagine: extraordinary navigational methods, abilities to regenerate lost limbs, live symbiotically with light-producing bacteria, reproduce asexually, survive in suspended animation, change shape and color at will and much more!

Echidna (Family Tachyglossidae)

Echidnas, also known as 'spiny anteaters', are small mammals that are covered with coarse hair and spines. They have elongated and slender snouts which have the functions of both the mouth and nose. Their short, strong limbs with large claws help make them powerful diggers.

This spiny anteater has two quite unusual characteristics: 1.) It has no teeth because it feeds on insects. They feed by tearing open soft logs and using their long, sticky tongues to collect their prey. 2.) The echidna, along with the Platypus, are the only egg-laying mammals. The female lays a single soft-shelled, leathery egg twenty-two days after mating and deposits it directly into her pouch, where it hatches and develops.

The echidna looks fearsome enough, but it is a shy animal and would rather retreat than fight if disturbed. When frightened it will curl into a ball, with its snout and legs tucked beneath it and its sharp spines sticking out. It will wedge itself beneath rocks, or burrow straight down into soft soil, to escape predators such as dogs, eagles and dingos.

NOTE: If you're going to get this cache, I highly recommend finding the nearby 'Negative Ion Generator' cache. You will LOVE the waterfall!

Cold wet day but didn't want to be cooped up inside. Took a batman disk, left a parachute cord bracelet and keychain.
