An easy to find cache, flat terrain
The hills in this area have been mined for iron ore for the last
100 years, initially to supply the lead smelter in Port Pirie and
later to supply iron ore for an integrated steelmaking plant
located at Whyalla.
Mining started at Iron Knob with nothing more than picks and
shovels and was a hard life. Times have changed and with modern
technology mining is now carried out with dump trucks capable of
moving 50 tonnes at a time Mining has progressed south through the
Middleback ranges down to Iron Baron, iron cavalier, then down to
its present location, Iron Chieftain and Iron Duke.
This cache was set up whilst a group of friends were out camping
over a long weekend enjoying the hills in the area and the local
wild life

December 21, 2008 by Liz and Bruce (6586 found) Thought we would take the other way to Cowell and pick this cache up on the way. No one told us we could catch the 9.30 train out here. Interesting location and we found the cache without any problem. Thanks offroad campers
