Een wandeling van ongeveer 1,5 kilometer langs oude
havengebouwen.

Parkeer in de omgeving van N 51°14.074 E004° 24.268
Wees voorzichtig (let op de kinderen) want de kaaien hebben geen
omheining. Er hangen overal reddingsboeien en lange stokken,maar
het is beter die niet nodig te hebben. Je moet ook nergens op of af
te klauteren. Deze wandeling is een logische voortzetting van :
Eilandje 1
Vanaf de parkeerplaats ziet men hier het
oude aanwervingslokaal van de scheepsherstellers, beter bekend als
de SHOP. Dit gebouw is in verhouding met de andere gebouwen op deze
site redelijk recent en straalt een beetje de Expo architectuur uit
van de jaren zestig. Antwerpen is trouwens wereldberoemd geweest
voor herstellingen en onderhoud. De Kattendijksluis was de tweede
en aanzienlijk grotere naast de Bonapartesluis. Spijtig voor de
pleziervaart is zij nu gesloten. Het is de bedoeling om binnen
afzienbare tijd een nieuwe te bouwen voor de yacht en pleziervaart.
U vindt hier ook de Brazilliëstraat met zijn beroemde Montevideo
pakhuizen,alsook de befaamde burelen van SANBA (sociète anonyme de
navigation Belgo-Ameriquaine) waar tot in de negentiende eeuw de
landverhuizers hun ticket kochten voor de overtocht naar Amerika.
De kunstenaar Eugeen Van Mieghem woonde en werkte op dit gedeelte
van het eilandje. Langs het Kattendijkdok-Westkaai heeft nu het
Ballet Van Vlaanderen zijn hoofdkwartier samen met de Koninklijke
Filharmonie van Vlaanderen in het oude gebouw van Belliard-Murdoch
gevestigd. Na jaren van verval is er momenteel een opbloei van
allerlei manifestaties zoals : Laundry day,Gay-parade,
binnenvaarttentoonstellingen en nog veel meer. Veel
wandelgenot.

Be careful around the docks. This goes doubly for children. There
are lifebuoys all around, yet it's better not having to use them.
Never climb up or down anything either, and remember the dock may
be slippery. This is a continuation of : Eilandje 1
From the parking lot we can se the
recruitingoffice of the ship repairmen, better known as "de SHOP".
This building is quite recent compared to the other buildingsin the
area and shows the Expo architecture of the sixties. Antwerpen was
world famous in those days for ship repair and maintenance. The
Kattendijksluis ( Cat-dike-lock ) was the second lock after the
neighbouring Bonapartelock, and considerably larger. It is closed
now, but there are plans of building a new one for the yachting
community. The Brazilliëstraat houses the famous Montevideo
warehouses, and the offices of SANBA(sociète anonyme de navigation
Belgo-Ameriquaine) where the emigrants bought their tickets for the
Americas. The painter Eugeen Van Mieghem lived and worked in this
part of the island. The Ballet of Flanders now has its headquarters
along the Kattendijkdok - West, along with the Royal Filharmonic of
Flanders, in the old Belliard-Murdoch building. After years of
decline the naighbourhood is on the rise again, with expositions
and events such as : Laundry day, the Antwerp Gay-parade and lots
