Geocache Description:

Mt Britton Constructed of stone, the tower was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Both tower and mountain are named for botanist Nathaniel Britton who with his wife and colleague, Elizabeth Knight Britton identified a substantial amount of the native and endemic tree and plant species of the Luquillo mountains in the 1920s. On a clear day the tower’s observation deck affords the lucky hiker a panoramic view of the surrounding forest, the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the southeastern and northeastern coastal plain The Mount Britton Trail starts with a short walk from Road 191, at an elevation of 2,493 feet and climbs 594 feet in this short distance. The trail is narrow, but paved, and well-maintained. From USDA El Yunque National Rainforest web site To get to the trail head, you need to go up Road 191until it ends. Once you get to the end, turn right onto Road 930 and go approximately ¼ mile west until you come to the end of the road. There is limited parking available on the left (south) side of Road 930, just before the trail head sign. If there’s no available parking on Road 930, you can park on the side of Road 191, just be sure not to block the gate. NOTE: We, a group of geocachers, understand that if you want to go to the Yunque’s most spectacular sites and have 3-4 hours to spare, this is the order of the caches you should follow: Portal, La Coca Falls, Yokahu Tower, Mt. Britton, Los Picachos, The Peak, On The Top of the Yunque, The Rock and Baño Grande. After these and if you still want to do more you can go to Radar Cache. If you don’t have time and just want to do the “easier ones” then this is the order: Portal, La Coca, Yokahu and Baño Grande
