Find those Civil Defense Sirens!
Civil Defense Sirens (outdoor warning devices) are all over the US
(and the world)! Is there one of these structures in your
community, legacy of the Cold War paranoia? One of the last times
these sirens went off was to celebrate the end of the Vietnam war.
However, duing the height of the Cold War, it wailed every Friday
afternoon. Kids in nearby schools were drilled what to do in an
actual nuclear emergency. They were instructed to crawl under their
desks, hands clasped behind their heads. As any baby boomer knows,
this is known as the "Duck and Cover" position... pie in the sky
protection against a nuclear holocaust.
To log this cache you must:
- Take a waypoint at the siren and submit to coordinates with
your find.
- Take a picture of the siren with your GPSr in the picture and
upload it to your find log.
- Only one find per account and one per siren.
- Any additional history or recollections would be great (such as
when was the last time you heard the siren).
Note: You may now create a waymark for your find in the
Outdoor Warning Sirens category (if you are a premium
member.)
