"When fortune empties her chamberpot on your head, smile -- and say ‘we are going to have a summer shower.’ "

-- Sir John A. Macdonald, ca. 1875

This is the third in a series of caches related to Canada's Prime Ministers. To find the cache, you'll need to do some exploring and some research on Canada's first Prime Minister.

N 45 ab.cde

substitute the letters for the numbers in the answers to the following:

a - Last digit in the year his family left Scotland for North America

b - Number of children Macdonald had

c - Visit his statue on Parliament Hill (co-ordinates above). With which foot does he put forward? (4=left 8=right)

d - Number of times the letter "A" appears in the name of the place he is buried "_______ Cemetery" plus 1

e - While at the Parliament Hill statue, take note of which hand he holds his spectacles (3=left 6=right)

W 75 fg.hij

f - Number of letters in the month during which he was conferred with Knighthood

g - The third digit in the year that the city of Hamilton placed his sculpture at the corner of King/Hughson streets

h - The final digit of the year in which he created Canada's first national park (and then subtract 1 from this digit)

i - The third digit of the year he created the North West Mounted Police

j - The sum of the first and fourth digits of the year that the last spike was driven into the trans-Canada railway (in Cragellachie by Donald Smith)

There are a growing number of caches to complete while in this area and trail system, and will add to your enjoyment of the time invested in this cache. In the winter, the trails are prime for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. In the summer, the trails are great for biking and hiking. Bring bug spray!

There are trails that will take you very close to the cache, with only a small amount of bushwacking at the end.

The trails are also dog-friendly, but in the winter there are cross country skiiers, and some snow mobiles.

Have fun!

Cheers,

5Newfs

I did the research for this cache in 2003! Never went for it though. I recall Tripper's FTF, him drenched in snow and thinking in 2003, maybe it was a good idea not to go out there in the middle of the night. Finally grabbing it years later (after redoing the research) with the Geomob.

Haven't seen the Newfs in awhile, I hope they're well!

Second of the morning in the company of the GeoMob. The trails were nice and hard packed. We only put the snowshoes on when we had to leave the trail. Once in the woods, the fun began! The scenery was totally awesome and the bushwhack on snowshoes was interesting. A few spills here and there and lots of snow falling on the back of your neck!!! It was incredible!! After circling around a bit and some backtracking, we met up with Sakidoo and Dnd who were already at GZ. They had started to excavate the 'spot' but hadn't located the ammo box yet. Once there, I joined in and found the cache after some more digging. what a great way to start the day.

Oh man! What a feeling. Dadndaughter and I dug for a while at GZ and then came along the geomob to join us in unveiling the cache. Many hands makes work light! It was really glad to knock this off my list after a few failed attempts at the wrong GZ. Today was victorious! Woohoo!

Thought I had done all the leg work on the puzzle before leaving home...not so, just need a plus one to sort out the final. The geomob was out for a winter snowshow trip to the cache today and met up with Dadndaughter and Sakidoo well into their search. A few extra hands made for a quick find. The snow covered trees, blue skys and geomob made for a great day on the trail, TFTH.

The Saturday Morning Caching Club (Falach-Fead, Zartimus, Model12, missbug, GeoAventuriers, DadnDaughter, Sakidoo and I attending today) found it. It was a beautiful day for a hike, the trail was hardpacked and easy, and the cache was an easy find too! The last little bit was something of a bushwack but we managed. The stump doesn't look at all as it did back in 2005...

Finally. After all these years of driving by the solved coordinates I managed to find this one with the help of the Ottawa Geomob. I'm sure I could have found it on my own, by why deprive the gang of a forced route march and a bear of a digging job at the GZ...! No trails to the cache today, so we bushwacked our way to and from the GZ. Geoaventuriers made the find in about 30 seconds of searching...after Dadndaughter and Sakidoo had spent 15 minutes burrowing through the snow. All is fine with the cache and the container, and although the hiding spot is disappearing, there's lots to last for a few more years at least.

Bushwacked in for about 350 metres from the trail of E5. Tough bushwack and I guess it isn't winter friendly. We dug around the likely spot today but nadda. We came out empty handed. That coupled with the fact that I was starting to feel the pains of food poisoning didn't help. I'll be back in the fall and try E3 access too.

My God. Words alone can not adequately describe the relief that I felt when I finally found my 'Closest to home' cache... Quite the coincidence that the area that the final is in happens to share a name with where I live!

Yes, Narcissa was concerned with the 'bushwhack' that was between us and the cache, however it was less than 100 feet before we hit another trail that took us right to it. This was, of course, not quite as nice as the road that we had been following, but at least it was drier!

Anyway, We found it right away, and headed back to the Parking lot. I'm so relieved that I can finally put this cache behind me, that I don't even really have a story to tell about it.

I am still curious, though, as to why the parking lot smelt of rotting flesh...

Taoiseach and I had this one solved for a while, and we were in the general area of the final and decided "Hey, why not?" We were greeted by a very funky, rotten stench emanating from somewhere near the parking lot. After that, the walk in to the cache was fairly easy, though the final bushwhack presented a bit of a challenge. Enjoyed the peace and quiet, and watching frogs playing in the puddles along the way. I rescued a geocoin that's probably been stranded in this cache for some time. Thanks for the cache. It's been a long time coming!

Finally! This cache is probably one the first I solved and waited to grab for so many months. I've been planning to go there since a couple of years, but it never happened.

Today was the day and I was quite happy about it! Les Routards and I looked for the best entry point for a while before we settled on a small nearby trail.

I'm glad this cache won't show anymore as the "closest" unfound!

Took nothing and left a Canada geocoin (where else would it go?).

Glad to grab this one.. One of the closest to home but a long bike ride to the cache (40 km!!), good thing I got a drive to within 250 m...

Too bad this cache sat in my solved pile for so long but that is geocaching when the cache page doesn't say "cache is within 50 km of posted co-ordinates" and you have to wait until a drive to the area.

Thanks for the bike ride!
And BIG thanks to 3-Bearss for the drive and 'testing out the waters'!!

With the puzzle solved, 3-Bearss, JSDAFM, & Mr. Packrat made the long drive to this cache! When we got there, it was a ride on the mountain bikes (3-Bearss ended up in water 2/3 up his bike tires! then we road to the closest wet starting point, Bushwhacke the last 200 metres and fought off the bugs! Wow, wet, muddy, half eating alive and then we found it!

Was finally going to head out to the GZ area today, so thought I'd give this cache a try. Completed nearby caches first, and then stayed on firm snowmobile trail till around 200m from cache site. Started impressive bushwack with my snowshoes in the deep, deep powder snow. Definately no geotrails here!. Approached GZ in an area where the trees thinned out, and there were small clearings. Well, unless the cache is tied to a tree 2-3 feet above the ground, this guys is buried! Walked around for a while looking for signs of the cache. Dug a few holes. No luck. My hiking stick could easily sink 2-3 feet in the powder, so my hunch this guy is buried!

As the previous finder, I also had done the homework eons ago, but never got around to going after the cache.

Today I did. I took a chance on the road and drove to within 250 meters of the cache before busing it.

Cache was easy find. All in Order.

1440h. Okay, like some other geocachers, I made two trips to hunt this cache. We came lookin' on New Year's Eve day but failed to find the cache. Once home and a recheck of my numbers, I found I didn't read the instructions properly and failed to add 1 to the number of As in the cemetery name. Duh! That put us off by 20m. So, out to the forest again today. A word to those following behind me. Stay on the main trail until you see a smaller side trail. The side trail takes you to within 50m of the cache. I knew that after the previous visit but got cocky and thought I'd bushwhack a different route. NOW I know what Tripper was doing when he made his attempt after the cache was first placed. Man but the bush is dense if you're not on a trail of some kind. Anyhow, the GPSr led us right to the cache. 'Though frozen in, we soon had it extracted. A great day to pull the kids along on the sled in Marlborough Forest 'though the snow cover has melted substantially from four days ago.

From my home, the round trip was a bit more than the usual cache hunt. Fortunate enough to drive part way to the cache site, and the remainder was a hike through the bush to the final destination, the prize. No problem with the signal in the dense brush, and the GPS brought right to ground zero. Noticed a few deer stands on the way in,and with Fall right around the corner it's best to do this one before bow season starts.Found the cache, and checked the log entries for familiar names, made no trades, signed the log,and ventured back out to the road.
Just an exceptional cache. Thanks so much..

Fortunately I had a compass with me and navigated back to the road about 200 meters from where I left the truck.

First cache of the year on the first day of the year: Canada's First! Found the cache location with little trouble, but retrieving the cache itself was a bit of a challenge after the weather we've had recently. Took the Christmas tree eraser and a lanyard, left a Canmore pin and a parliamentary loonie (not meant as any comment or reflection on Sir John A.). Thanks for leading us out to another great place for woodland geocaching!

Got it at 0920 hrs in company with Gidget (sans Gadget), Mudlark and Drummy! Finally! I started this cache in the fall of 2003!

The secondary trails were no better than canals, you could canoe most of the way to this cache, but we came prepared with our wellies and fought on through. Scarlett03's co-ordinates were correct and we found the cache without any trouble. I took a US $5.00 bill and left behind a St. John Ambulance volunteer pin and a small carabiner. Cheers,

I got Scarlett03 to double check my figures, and she found one discrepancy! I derived a 2, she found it should be a 4! We were 255 meters from the cache! This will have to wait until I get back from England, but I'm sure I can convince Mudlark and Mattawa to try for some more caches in the Marlborough before it gets too boggy & buggy! We'll be back!

Tried for this one today with Mudlark, Mattawa, and Tom as we passed by doing some other caches in the area. I 'solved' the puzzle in 2003 and put it aside waiting for a winter's day like today. But despite my enthusiasm, the lovely day and the great trails it appears I got something wrong! There was no cache at the co-ordinates I derived! I'll have to return for this one before spring turns the area into a swamp again. Cheers,

We did the homework on this one a couple of months back, and finally made it out to the area to try to find this cache. We made it pretty close. We were about 250 metres from the cache, but in between us and it was a flooded trail. There was a serious amount of water. Not a surprise, given the deluge that hit the area last week. Unfortunately we didn't have rubber boots or hip waders. We'll try this one again sometime - when it's drier. There's a lot of other caches in the area still to find, as we've noticed.

ps. what equals a small amount of bushwacking to the 5Newfs? Just curious. :-)

This cache was my 'mission' from the 'mission imposible' travel bug. I solved the puzzel about 2 weeks ago but only just had time today to hit the cache. It is in good shape and the walk in was really nice (except for the part where I took the wrong trail and had to bushwack accross for 200 m to the right trail) (and except for the part where the dear flies had me running for my life...) Traded $5 American for a screwdriver. Thanks to the 4newfs for a very possible mission impossible!

Tried for this one today. Parked just off the main road and walked in along the access road. It was soft and quite muddy in spots, but passable. When I got to about 250m from the final coordinates, a lake appeared in the road. It was only a few inches deep, and covered with ice, so I gave it a try. Alas, I the ice was too thin and I got a couple of soakers, so I turned back. I'll have to try again sometime when it's dryer.

The stump really gave it away. I left a big bird fiqurine for an emergency blanket. Lots of water along the way and very creepy. This forest even makes real men shudder.

Ya Right! Maybe there WAS a nearby trail BEFORE the last snow. Blazed a trail for the next group of cachers to follow. As I neared the cache I heard some wimpering, when I finally found the cache and opened it, out jumped Rocky. He said he was freezing his a%% off and wanted to go with me to keep warm. So after depositing a kids puzzle in the cache Rocky and I left for the warm confines of the car and Hershey's Chocolate Factory.

After yesterday afternoon's charade, I quickly 'solved' the quiz again as was prepared to go to the Far Side again today. Luckily, this morning, I found that the cache had been amended and that we would have had another trip to The Lost Horizon. All of a sudden it struck me...familiar territory...OK! Let's go!!!

Conversation in car on the way to the cache:

Me:I wonder if Tripper has recovered yet from Sunday's outing. He will probably sneak out from work around noon today. For sure nobody would have gone out last night after we left the parking lot.

Wife: You know I almost said yesterday that we should check out THAT SPOT on the way by, it really wasn't that far.

Me: WHAT!!! . Why didn't you!!! Oh well, we have a chance today to get it first...maybe.

Me:Oh, Oh! There's a vehicle's track leading DOWN the trail! Damn, it's probably Tripper . That b__ger was goading me on in his last e-mail. Damn his soul!!!

Me:Geezus H C____t. It's MLORD!!!!!

Well, we greeted each other and had a nice friendly chat. And yes, he had just been to the cache. Found it, of course, AND we learned that Tripper had got there first. Mlord kindly offered us a ride to the cache but we needed the exercise, so off we went on foot.

This time we took the Road Most Travelled By....but it didn't make any difference at all. Another rough bushwack, waltzing in circles around trees which dump snow down your neck. Somebody said there was a short easy bushwack in!

Found the cache at 11:25 am, bang on coords, signed the log and took the Canada hackysack left by mlord. But, We left Rocky The Racoon Travel Bug for Tripper (or whichever other nut) wants to come out to this *&(^@# place.

The car mileage and foot mileage we put into finally finding this one was way beyond average......But we enjoyed it nonetheless!

Thanks 4Newfs for the adventure. Now we are suffering from PMS (Prime Minister Stress) syndrome!

Cheers!

Mmm.. my second log disappeared somehow, so I'm reposting mostly from memory here now.

During the brute-force exhaustion (which left this brute exhausted) of all possibilities for The Confusing Clue, I did end up exploring all kinds of neat nearby areas. Also verified that the Subaru AWD with snow tires works very well on very unlikely 'roads'.

Met Binthair, Wife, and Dog on my way out as they were walking in.. broke the sorry news to them. Apparently they have also been logging lots of KMs on this one prior to finally getting the important digit correct.

It was only after talking with binthair (and then later reading it here) that I discovered that The Confusing Clue had been modified for us lesser mortals (those not from The Rock).

Thanks again 4newfs.

Boy I know how that feels, I'm pretty sure someone will have binthair before me. Of course it's great to have you guys beta test the cache first through the correction phase for the rest of us folks...

RE: (visit link)

I can just see you spiking the ammo box and doing an end-zone dance. Was it John Madden who said 'when you score a touchdown, try and act like you've been there before.

200m?!?!? I need 4-wheel drive. Look at me, I look as if somebody just threw me off the side of Mt. Everest and I snow-plowed all the way down on my face. (visit link)

Oh, but I had fun... didn't I?

Tripper you Bas.. err.. nice guy!

Anyway, after trying/visiting the coordinates for several possible values of the now-changed clue above, I finally stumbled across the correct value this morning.

Took some quickrelease thingies, left a Canada-Flag hacky-sack for the next finder.

An engaging chase, to say the least. This was my third day out to this general area. Managed to drive within 200m or so of the cache today, but the bushwhack from there was horrendous! I saw the likely easier trail veering off, but, oh well.

Thanks 4newfs!

Oh yeah, it nearly slipped my mind ... Here's my FIRST FIND log...

(GC#155) Solo night-raid during a snow storm,... on x-c skis -- yes, I am insane (or incredibly stupid)!! But this one had become personal. After seeing that no 'found it' logs (especially not by binthair) had been posted to this cache by 7pm, I thought, I have to get out there and find this damn thing ... FIRST!!

Now, besides mind-altering drugs, how the hell does a man get pumped up for such a bone-head mission? Three words, Metallica. The usual Van Morrison or Trey Anastasio or Steve Tibbetts or even Joe Satriani just didn't cut it under these extreme circumstances. Metallica is a pure adrenalin driving force. You know what else? I can't sing to Metallica worth sheite. That said, I pulled into the parking lot around 7:50pm, changed into my ski boots, packed up the backpack (checking twice to make sure I had my cell phone, water, a snack, and my Hurricane lighter cause God knows I wasn't leaving this place til I found it) and finally I slapped on the skis and the headlamp and started down the trail at break neck speed (really, I almost broke my neck when I hit a real ugly snowmobile rut that had iced over - ARG!). Some time later, I managed to get fairly close to the cache before I had to take off my skis and start into the oh-so-familiar bushwhacker's shuffle. After much snow falling down the back of my neck I finally --BLAMO!!-- spotted my goal. It was 8:45pm.

The question now was, should I take a couple of pics first before I open up the log book to find that binthair has already 'binhere' and found this cache before me? Yeah, sure. I might as well enjoy this for as long as possible. Took some pics, checked out the cache contents, scooped the travel bug and the firestarters and left a multi-tool screw driver picked up at 'Message to Sparta by Zartimus' and a praying mantis from 'Green Frog's Cache by canoemagic'. Then I cracked the log book... WOOHOOoooooo!!! I really am number one... I mean first find!! By 9:30pm I was back on the road to the softer sound of some Cowboy Junkies and Mazzy Star.

PS: At some point during this 3 day cache mission, I came to the conclusion that there is a 'good-Newf' and a 'bad-Newf'. The 'good-Newf' is obviously the puppy - puppies just can't be evil. But the 'bad-Newf(s)' (which one(s) of the remaining 3 it is I have yet to discover) is pure evil and among other things, was solely responsible for strategically placing the snow on the trees that falls directly down the back of your neck when you walk under it. ARG! Keep an eye on these guys folks.

Thanks for a great cache that I won't soon forget,
Tripper
(+1 - my oldest gets credit for her incredible bushwhacking skills and enthusiasm on the 'no find' mission)

Hi Everyone -

Nice to see so many people having fun on this one! We've had a flurry of email and have tried to keep all the additional hints on equal footing.

There was lots of confusion about question b - so we decided to change it to something that should be more clear. Hopefully that will help!

Looking forward to hearing about the first find!

Best,

4Newfs

Glad to see I wasn't the only dummy to mess up the coordinates. I don't know about you but I'm sticking to the 'I was drunk' excuse.

The question still remains... who will be first to this cache?

Find it? Hell we didn't even come close!

Quoting Tripper: 'Hopefully all of our strange, snowshoe rabbit like tracks will confuse binthair ....'. Tripper, I don't need to be confused any more than I am right now...LOL!

After bagging 3 other caches today we figured we had just enough sunlight left to get this one. After all, we had solved the clues easily enough (yeah right!).

Tried a short cut from a little used road and wasted 2.6 km. Then we approached from a more sane location. We left the parking lot with sunglasses on at 3 pm and didn't return until 5:30 pm still with sunglasses on. Boy it was DARK! Covered another 9 km! All to no avail! Total clicks for caches today was 13.0 km and we are dog-tired, even our Wonder Dog!

Got back home and reread the quiz. OH YEAH!!! That's where we went wrong...DOH!..... (Bangs head on desk several times)

We'll be back!

Cheerszzzzzz.....

During our research last night on John A. we came across an interesting tidbit... Johnnie had a drinking problem. Occassionally his drinking affected his work. Last night, I too had a few drinks. Apparently it affected my work.

My 'little' mistake cost us 2 hours of bushwhacking. We whacked and we whacked and then we whacked some more. I know the trails in this area... and now I know the bush too. Although I am certain we were close (we even saw the object in the 'you're close pic') we still managed to miss the actual cache. It wouldn't have been all that bad but my oldest also got up at 7am this morning and asked to come along for the hike. She was a little tired and frustrated (like papa) but it was nothing that some ice cream with smarties on top couldn't remedy.

Anyhow, we cut our loss early and did some more 'casual' hiking in the area... 6 hours later we returned home to mom and baby sister (who were starting to get a little concerned about us).

PS: Hopefully all of our strange, snowshoe rabbit like tracks will confuse binthair and the others. But we doubt it.

Tripper +1
