Cross County Greenway - Balm (north) Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

TheWeatherWarrior: Never crazy about this one (kinda dangerous). Since I'm condensing and consolidating, this cache was removed and the container will be repurposed.

Geocache Description:

Part of a series (by placement date, not by position) of what will hopefully one day will be a great rails-to-trail pathway. TECO's rail line is along this point, you can see the raised ground of the former railroad bed.

**If cache is not found, DO NOT REPLACE, only "Did not Find". Any "Found it" logs saying they replaced cache will be deleted.**

**CAUTION, the shoulder is more steeply angled than the vegetation makes it seem. I was OK with AWD, but not recommended for large vehicles or non-4wd/awd vehicles. More stable parking is ahead. I wish there was better, but the series and placement is about discovering old rail line with the limited right-of-way to view it.

There was public hearings in 2011 regarding the proposed trail that is desired to go through this spot. I will try to add information as I find it, at the bottom of the cache description.

  • Some stealth required, you won't go unseen, but not making it obvious what your doing is key. Sometimes the road is empty, other times the road is busy.
  • Please stay on the public right-of-way and do not cross any fences or sections marked No Trespassing or private property.
  • If you cannot find the cache, do NOT replace it (aka throw-down cache). If you do not find it, or find the container without a log...log as a "Did Not Find" with a good description if you think it is missing/damaged. I will replace/restore the cache.

There is a number of trails in Hillsborough and surrounding counties. It is something that is growing in the Tampa Region. However, it has been tough for the county & state to appropriate funds for building new ones. Many are designated on maps, but never constructed. This area is one of them. In this case it is a rails-to-trails. This section is an old line that traveled north and south with a slight angle connection to the Power Plant in northern Manatee County, south of this spot.
