This is the first cache planted by Troop 103 (Ventura, CA). Our
2006 New Years Resolution is to "Get Out More" and today's hike was
the first of many to come - plus geocaching adds an extra element
of fun. We planted this cache originally on New Year's Day 2006 but
it disappeared sometime during late summer. On December 30, 2006 we
put together a hike to re-establish and re-activate the cache. The
new location is about 10 ft from the original location so the
coordinates have been updated!
Mugu Peak and the La Jolla Valley Grassland Preserve are great
destinations. The cache is located along the La Jolla Valley trail.
You can reach the cache via either Chumash Trail (trailhead is
across from Pt Mugu Shooting Range, parking is free in the dirt lot
at the trailhead) or the La Jolla Canyon trailhead (this is an
offical State Park lot which charges a $4 Day Use Fee). To Mugu
Peak, the trail is 5.5 miles RT via Chumash Trail or 8 miles RT
from La Jolla Canyon trailhead. The ocean views from the top of
Mugu Peak are awesome!
UPDATE 12/30/2006. We re-activated the cache today. It is well
stocked with goodies and offers a reward for the the next FTF.
Besides the log book, we ask fellow geocachers to also sign the Geo
Baseball which we will retrieve and exhibit when it is covered with
signatures. Since our original hike on 1/1/2006, there are a bunch
of new caches placed in the area. A geocacher with a love for a
good hike will have a great time up here! Our TroopMugu2 is just up
the trail from this one...
The joy of this and the other caches in the area is the hike
itself - so getting here is the hard part, finding the cache is the
easy part.
P.S. If you liked this hike, go after my TroopSisar and TahitiEast
caches in beautiful Sisar Canyon! Take a dip at the waterfall!
