Geocache Description:

This is a 50 caliber ammo can located on top of Mt. Irvine in Allegany State Park. It is a 1.6 mile walk with a vertical rise of 913 ft. It is reached using ASP horse trail #1. Footing is good but occasionally steep. Rice benchmark can also be reached here.

This cache is placed near the foundation of the dismantled Mt. Irvine fire tower. Mt. Irvine is named after one of the first families to settle here. It is reached using Allegany State Park horse trail number 1. The trail meets Parkside Drive in Limestone, NY at N42°3.7049' W078°38.8497. The trail is an old logging / fire tower road and provides a safe if somewhat strenuous climb to the top. After you leave the road at the top of the hill the horse trail crosses the hill and passes between the footings for the old tower.

You can also get the Rice benchmark set that is also on the mountain. It is located at N42°03.81715' W078°39.9867'. There will be lots to log when you do this hike!
