This cache is placed at ~7480' along the main Organ ridge at the
top of Big Windy Canyon. This canyon separates the Rabbit Ears
group (to the north) from the Needles (to the south). The canyon
itself is flanked by the Rabbit Ears Massif and Gerch.
This is not a technical climb and no special equipment is needed.
The route I took required rock scrambling over large boulders and
intense bushwhacking through thorny brush and dense forests. (This
route may try your patience so be sure you're up for it.)
I hiked up Topp Hutt Rd. and eventually left the road somewhere
between Topp Hutt and the mine and headed E/SE toward the mouth of
the canyon. (There seemed to be less thorny brush on the high
ground but there's no way to avoid it altogether.) Once at the
canyon I hiked up the north wall for awhile until the canyon floor
became rockier. Then I hiked the bottom of the canyon up to the
top.
At the top you will find nice close-up views of the Rabbit Ears
Plateau and the South Rabbit Ear to the north as well as Gerch's
Folly to the south. Also, there are nice views of Aquirre Springs,
WSMR, Sugarloaf, and the Organ Needle.
It's possible this cache could be reached from Aguirre Springs off
the Baylor Pass trail then straight up the rocky ridge toward the
cache. The route would be much shorter with less elevation gain but
I can't vouch for the terrain.
