The David Z. Norton was originally launched in June 1973 with the name William R. Roesch, a part of the Kinsman Transit Company fleet.
It became a part of the Oglebay Norton fleet in 1994 and renamed in 1995. It changed hands again 2006 to Wisconsin and Michigan Steamship Company and renamed David Z, and finally sold to Grand River Navigation in 2008.
The boat is a straight deck self un-loader. The Boat is 630 feet in length and has a maximum load capacity of 19,650 tons. It is powered by 2 V16 cylinders, 2,800 horsepower diesel engine.
