THE HISTORY
The money and land to build this museum was given to Walter Rothschild by his father N.M Rothschild, the first Baron Rothschild as a 21st birthday present. The Baron regarded his son's interest in nature as a harmless pastime, little suspecting that it would lead to the creation of one of the greatest Natural History collections ever assembled by one man.
Lord Rothschild also kept livestock in the grounds of the museum and in Tring Park. Among the more exotic animals were Zebras, a tame wolf, Rheas, Marabou Storks, a Dingo, Kangaroos, Kiwi, Cassowaries, and Giant Tortoises.
Before his death in 1937 Lord Rothschild gifted the entire museum and it's collections to the Trustees of the British Museum - on a condition that it remain a centre for zoological research. It is now a branch of the Natural History Museum.
A magnificent library was added between 1908 and 1912. It houses some 40,000 books including many historical and scientific journals.
As in Lord Rothschild's day scientific research continues behind the scenes. A newer building adjacent to the museum houses an ornithological collection boasting one of the worlds greatest collection of birds. There are over a million specimens including Darwin's Finches and several thousand skeletons and nests. These collections are not open to the public but are utilised by scientists from all over the world.
