Trail's End, Coyote Creek in Stonegate Park Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

STP Ron: Since the trail construction means that this will no longer be the end of the Coyote Creek Trail, the cache title does not apply to this location. When they finish the construction, I may put a new cache at the end of the extension or let someone else do it.

Geocache Description:

A micro-cache hidden near the end of the trail along Coyote Creek in Stonegate Park

The Coyote Creek Trail runs continuously from Anderson Dam in Morgan Hill to near Tully Road (so far) in San Jose. The County Parks part of the trail stops at Coyote-Hellyer Park. North of Yerba Buena Road, it's a San Jose city park trail. Between Yerba Buena and Capitol Expressway is an old forlorn section that needs work. North of Capitol is a newer section that looks as good, or even better, than the county part of the trail. I put a series of caches here to draw attention to this new trail segment. This new section is sandwiched between Coyote Creek and the Los Lagos Golf Course from Capitol Expressway to Stonegate Park.

While the Coyote Creek Trail ends at the entry to Stonegate Park, there is still a paved park path you can follow along Coyote Creek. It ends at the north end of the park next to the San Jose Police Department's Horse Mounted Unit's facility. This cache marks the end of the trail. Plans are in the works to extend the trail farther northward, so this is only the end of the trail for now. Hopefully, someday I'll have to rename this cache.

The cache is hidden inside of the park. It's easy to get to, but it may be a little muddy in the winter, which will prevent wheelchair access. It may be wheelchair-accessible in the dryer months. You do not need to go on the creek side of the fence. Remember that the facility on the north side of the fence is technically a police station. Don't go hopping the fence to look for the cache or pet the horses. Also, don't act suspicious. There may be cops watching. Nearby is a skateboard facility, which is often crowded with kids. Don't let them see you retrieving the cache. Pretend you're looking at the horses or tying your shoe or something.

The cache is a camo'd small plastic tube, a little smaller than a mini-M&M's tube. It only has room for very small and skinny trading items. Initially it contained only a logsheet and pencil. Make sure you return it the same way you found it.

How do you get here? Well I prefer to take the Coyote Creek Trail from Capitol Expressway north. You can park in the shopping center at Capitol and Tuers. The trail entrance is across the street. You can also continue going north on Tuers Road off Capitol Expressway. Follow the golf course until it ends. Go around Stonegate School. Park near the edge of the school on Sherlock. You can also get here by taking Tully Road west from 101 and turning left (south) at Sherlock. Take Sherlock to the park. You'll see the trail entrance between the school and the Horse Mounted Unit fence. The trail is a gravel path that turns into a paved path at the skateboard facility.

If you go out to the street, turn left on Kenoga Drive, and take it to Tully Road, you'll see a new public library and a huge sport field complex there. There are some good cache opportunties there.
