One Step Cache Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Sagefox: The time has come for this cache to retire. Thanks to all who visited. This would be a great area for someone else to place a regular container cache. Nice view of Virgin Creek Beach.

Geocache Description:

No bushwhacking needed. The container is within one step of a side trail. Look for a plant group that is different and take only one step off the trail.

The hike to this cache from the public parking lot just north of The Beachcomber Motel is about .8 mile. This road is our ocean front paved trail that extends to just north of Ward Avenue or about 3.5 miles from the parking lot.

This is a very nice hiking, biking or horseback route with great views to and along the ocean. The trail was formerly the Union Lumber Company logging road and before that a logging railroad. Georgia-Pacific used to allow public vehicle access along this road on weekends. We used to drive to this location and park along the road for picnic afternoons. Before the storm washouts we used to be able to drive all the way to the Ten Mile River – and we’d have to drive on the left side of the road because all company logging roads were left-hand drive.

Now the road is public land because the big storms of the 90’s took out major sections along the Ten Mile Dunes and Georgia-Pacific rerouted the logging trucks to the highway. Soon this trail will extend south across the old railroad trestle and then south along the entire Fort Bragg water front to the Noyo River.

Nearby Virgin Creek is a great birdwatching location and a site with great ocean and beach views. Continue on up the road to four other local caches. Add in the Pudding Creek cache and that makes six caches to find while on an easy mid morning walk. For a real treat, start your walk at sunrise. The backlighting from the eastern sun highlights the headlands and ocean waves.
