Geocache Description:

Cache is located at High Falls, a popular destination in the Five Ponds Wilderness Area. Cache and corresponding Falls are well worth the detour from the Cranberry Lake 50 (<1 mile roundtrip)

Where: Geocache is located in close proximity to a lean-to, within sight of High Falls. Cache is hidden well enough to prevent firewood seekers from stumbling across it, though an experienced cacher shouldn't have a problem finding it.

Access to the trail system is via Wanakena, NY or Cranberry Lake, NY. In Wanakena, two parking areas are located on South Shore Road. In Cranberry Lake, look for the Burntbridge Pond trailhead on Rt. 3 east of the town of Cranberry Lake.

Cache: Standard ammo can. FTF prize includes an unlogged Travel Bug and RussellM signature rainbow trout. Cache is also well stocked for future hikers.

Trip Suggestions: This can be completed via the High Falls Loop (16.7 miles roundtrip). This trail will take you on the previous railroad bed from the logging days of the early 1900's. You will also experience eskars, beaver ponds, and massive blowdown from the microburst of 1995.

This can also be completed as part of the Cranberry Lake 50, a network of trails which circumvents Cranberry Lake. A patch is available for those that complete the hike. Check out Cranberrylake50.org for more infomation.

Lastly, it is possible to canoe to the site via the Oswegatchie River. Put in at Inlet, accessible via a dirt road off of Rt. 3 between Wanakena and Newton Falls. Lean-tos and campsite are plentiful along the river and trail.

Note that beaver activity is high between Janacks Landing and Wanakena, be prepared for wet feet.
