Geocache Description:

The New England Forestry Foundation (NEFF) is hosting a Summer Geo-Challenge in 12 NEFF-owned Community Forests throughout New England. NEFF is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the conservation and sustainable management of New England forestlands. It is our pleasure to share these forests with fellow outdoor enthusiasts!

9/15/06
The Grand Prize Winner of the 2006 Geo-challenge is Laurie Maldari of Massachusetts. Congratulations to Laurie and thanks to everyone who participated. We look forward to next year's event!

Parking area is 100' off Highland St. down a dirt driveway, which is located by a telephone pole with a small metal sign on it Verizon 2/15 at N42 08.766 and W070 45.826

This cache will take you by 6 different sections of the Forest, they will provide you with information about different management techniques used in this forest.

You can sign the logbook at the start of your walk provided by the Friends of Nelson Memorial Forest and pick up a map. Nelson Memorial Forest is maintained by the New England Forestry Service. It contains 12 marked areas that show different sections of the forest which are managed and unmanaged, at each section, marked with a number you will learn a different forestry technique. On your way to find the cache you will pass Marker #5 which will lead you down a trail to the former Packets Landing dock, located along the North River. In the 1700's boats would stop here with supplies for local farmers and load up with apples to take to Boston. The surrounding hillside was once an apple orchard. Wood remnants of the landing can still be seen by the river. Return and find the cache.

Enjoy the views of the North River, which is a designated National Natural Landmark and the only river in the state of Massachusetts with a Scenic Protective Order on it.

There is another cache in this forest and it is called “Up Cove Creek without a Paddle” you will pass more of the learning stations. This one is a 3-part multi, part one is near Nelson Forest Cache…

NEFF is grateful to all the wonderful volunteers throughout New England who placed these caches and made the Summer Geo-Challenge possible. Thank you “geo50chevy” for placing and care taking this cache in our Nelson Memorial Forest!!!
