Geocache Description:

The Cache is not at the posted co-ordinates, but they would probably be a good place to start.

I warn that that in order to find this cache, you will likely need to have some very rudimentary knowledge about famous early Ottawans, particularly relating to who streets are named after, and what they were once called.

To find this cache, you will have to follow a series of clues, picking up information along the way, and then make a simple projection to the cache.

THE STAMP IS A PART OF THIS CACHE - PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE IT

Since this is a small cache, I have not included a stamp pad (yet...) Please bring you own ink (Sharpies work, but not really well) if you want to stamp your personal log

Congratulations Bluelamb, Model12 & Mr Packrat - FTF!!!

br /> This cache is designed to be done on foot - Though if you do drive, know that there are many places which are not accessible by car.

Near the posted co-ordinates, you will see a large set of four informational plaques. Orient yourself such that Colonel's Hill is to your left, and Barracks Hill is to your right. Take note of the year in which Sleigh Bay was chosen to serve as the site of Entrance Valley.

Walking towards the Commissariat, and ultimately a house where a really 'Cranky' man used to live, you may notice a map of the area that you are in. Look at this map. Remember the years between which the Sappers' Headquarters sat on the opposite side of the Canal, as well as the years in which the two buildings on the west side of the Canal were built.

As you walk in the direction that you would be going if you were setting sail for Kingston, allow me to paraphrase William P. Lett:
And now, kind cacher, southward ho!
Towards the Sappers' Bridge we go;
When first in youth I cross'd it o'er,
The arch was wood, "and nothing more"—

Before you cross beneath this bridge (Dufferin, perhaps, but not the Sappers), turn to your right, and rise amongst 'The Valiants' (Weather permitting, you may have to go around).

Find a man named Isaac, who once did fight, upon the Ganges and at Queenston Heights. Notice his hat. His hat points you towards a path cut through the woods by a former employee of Philemon Wright.

Once across Biddy's Lane, near the next street, you will see a plaque to your left. Record the birth and death dates of the Man for whom this building is named. As an aside, as you cross the street, you may notice something which is Ottawa's arguably most famous landmark

Continue down this street, until you meet another early Ottawan - A man named Daniel.

Crossing to the west side of Daniel's namesake, turn now in the general direction in which you took your first steps for this cache. You might notice a plaque on the very east side of the first building you happen upon. Take note of the first date on this plaque, as well as the two years between which it was inhabited by L.N. Poulin.

From here, carry on to the spot where Daniel once met Maria. To the south by six blocks, and the east by one, you will find a house which was once owned by a prominent local Timber Baron, who also has a namesake street near downtown. Record the year that this house was completed. Mark a waypoint for this house, and adjust it to N45 xx.x84 W075 xx.x28. You will need this later.

If you look south from this corner, you will see a very large building. walk south until you can no longer continue along the road. Turn to the west, and walk until you see a plaque, which faces away from you. Reading this plaque, remember the years between which this building was constructed, as well as the latest year on the plaque.

By now you have recorded 14 years. Total these years.
Subtract 26000 from this number
Subtract 305, and divide this number by 100 to get a distance in miles - Call this X.XX
Subtract 280 from this number to get a bearing in Degrees True - Call this YYY

The cache is hidden in a tree, which is located X.XX Miles away from the waypoint that you marked at the Timber Baron's house, along a bearing of YYY

Update - 13 July 2015 - The new location of the cache is 75' away from the original, at a bearing of 238°.
