Skellig Michael

Skellig Michael, or Great Skellig, is an island (the larger of the two Skellig Islands) in the Atlantic Ocean, 11.6 km west of the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. A Christian monastery was founded on the island at some point between the 6th and 8th century, and was continuously occupied until its abandonment in the late 12th century. The remains of this monastery, along with most of the island itself, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1996.

This event has been arranged to allow like minded Geocachers to visit this unique site. There is a multi-cache and an earthcache on the island. The event itself will take place near one of the old ‘beehive’ like structures at the old monastery, high on the island. There will be a logbook signing and FTF draw.

Parking is to be had at Portmagee, the embarkation point for the island. In order to attend the event you will need to get to the island by boat or helicopter! If you have one of these then lucky you!!! Lol. Due to Groundspeaks' guidelines on commercialism and geocaching I cannot post details of how I and others will get the boat to the island. If you contact me, I will point you in the right direction! The departure time is between 10am and 11am. We will return between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. There should be at least 2 and a half hours on the island. There are no facilities on the island so come prepared. Bring a light waterproof jacket and sturdy hiking boots. Bring plenty of water to drink. If the weather is bad then the boat trip will be cancelled (it is up to the boatmen after all) and the event will be held at the Skellig Experience Visitors Centre at N51° 53.377’ W010° 22.044’. If you go to the 'Related Web Page' you can find out lots of 'interesting' information on the Skelligs, including the history of the islands and a gallery. There is no requirement to enter the visitor centre or to purchase anything from the visitors centre to be able to log your attendance at this event. To be able to log your attendance at this event, you must sign the log book which will be in my possession on the date of the event.
