Geocache Description:

In the Uxbridge woods can be found the crash site of a WWII bomber that went down on May 18th, 1944. Until recently, to reach this sacred spot required a hike through the woods, a pilgrimage made by some each year in May in memory of the crew members that perished. Today, a housing development surrounds the site, but a right-of-way of 200 feet to a stone marker exists for this Memorial Day tradition.

This spot is sacred to the memory of five officers of the US Army Air Force who gave their lives for country and humanity.

A formation of three B-24's were flying a training mission for two and one-half hours. After some high altitude maneuvers, they descended from 20,000 to 10,000 feet to make their last position change. One plane's tail section clipped the nose section of another. As the tail sheered off, that plane spiraled to the ground. Two of the seven member crew survived. The other disabled plane escorted by the third made it back to Westover Field for a safe landing. For more information, please refer to the user website given above.
The stone marker lists the rank and names of five of the crew members. Through the ages, a few of the engraved words have become defaced. To verify your visit, please email (1) the middle initial of two or more of those men, and (2) give at least one word that appears unreadable but that you have determined from the context.

Since this is a residential area, please observe sign at trail head, stay on the right of way for about 200 feet, do not venture beyond the marker, pay your respects, and restrict your visit to the hours 9AM to 6PM March through October, until 4PM November through February.
