Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache hidden along a new section of The Paumanok Path. Terrain has slight to moderate elevation changes along newly blazed trails. Cache is only a few feet off a side trail and will be a very easy find. Please stay on the trails until you get to the cache site. This is a no bushwhack cache.

On October 12th, JoeK and myself found ourselves doing something we didn't see ourselves doing just a few months ago. There we were with paint brushes and a squirt bottle filled with white paint, creating fresh markers to this brand new, one mile section of the 130 mile Paumanok Path. Our mentor today was Ken Kindler. Ken is one the most passionate people you will ever meet when it comes to advocating the preservation of open space and trail stewardship. When you spend the day with him you quickly realize that this is not just a hobby, this comes second only to his family in priority in his life. But don't call Ken a "tree hugger," his goals, ambitions and expectations are down to earth and reasonable. Long Island Geocachers, I can't begin to tell how fortunate we are to have a positive and flourishing relationship with Ken. It's the small things we can all do that will insure that geocaching will become a recognized and accepted activity for generations to come. Practicing stewardship when on the trails is a huge step in building strong coalitions with other Long Island Groups as well as land managers.

One thing we can do to make a difference is help stop what is the single most destructive element to our trails. The illegal use of ATVs. If you see anyone, anywhere riding AVTs, simply take a waypoint and even a photo if you can and call The Police. There is absolutely no public land on Long Island where ATV use is legal. These people are breaking the law and destroying these trails that people like Ken work tirelessly to build and maintain. I was proud to be a part of this project and look forward to many more. Cache is a Small Lock & Lock which contains the usual swag. The hike is a little over a half mile each way. You can catch a trailhead from Old Sag Harbor Rd or Great Hill Rd. The cache is smack in the middle so it doesn't matter which way you come from.
