Root of Marietta Multi-cache

owl1959: I stopped by the Root House this morning and took the attached photo that shows some of the construction around the site. Work is in process but a completion date is not known at this time. There is no guarantee that there will be a suitable spot for the cache's final stage once the construction is finished. Because of the uncertainties involved, we have elected to archive the cache and clear the space for others.

We are reluctant to let this fifteen year old historical cache lapse but many thanks to all that have visited it over the years.

Geocache Description:

This is a two stage cache in an urban environment with the two stages separated by about 0.7 miles.

This multi-stage cache is located adjacent to a historic house in Marietta, GA that is now a museum. To reach the final cache, you must first visit an old Marietta cemetery that is the resting place of many prominent citizens of the area including the original owner of the house.

When you arrive in the area of the above coordinates, you will find yourself in an old cemetery that dates back to the founding of Marietta. Be sure to spend some time among the many historical markers located here. Cemetery gates are closed at night.

These coordinates will lead you to a historical marker erected by the City of Marietta near the gravesite of William Root, a noted citizen of Marietta in the 19th century. Notice the year in which the Root house was built at its original location near St James Episcopal Church. From this year, subtract the number 1550. The result will be ABC.

Close to the city’s marker is the memorial for Mr. Root. Subtract 1776 from the year of his death. The resulting number is DEF.

This location is near the Root House Museum which is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Entry to the museum or the museum property is not required to locate the cache. The cache has room for only a log and a stubby pencil – No trading materials, please.
