Six geocaches have been placed in Dayton Cyn by Kurious Kate and Lady Lamont to supplement your hiking and geocachig pleasure with some knowledge about the early local native Americans. Fire in Sept 2005 ravaged this area but don't despair! Some caches survived and the others have been replaced. Look for CHUMASH CAVE, ROCKY ROAD, SAVORY SAGE, SEARED SUMAC, SUPER STAPLE, and SYCAMORE SANCTUARY. Notice they are listed alphabetically; you determine their order for seeking.
Development in the lower end of the canyon complicates access, so begin your search by parking on Woolsey Cyn Rd at N 34°14.092 W 118°39.546. If you are reluctant to retrace your path, team up with a geobuddy, park a vehicle near Roscoe and Valley Circle Blvds, and shuttle to the top. When you finish your hike, leave the area by way of a bulldozed road just above the chain link fence that runs west from Valley Circle Blvd. The road exits opposite the Deerlick Rd sign which you will see on the east side of Valley Circle Blvd.
SUPER STAPLE (not an office supply store) refers to a staple food of the Chumash: acorns. Produced by the plentiful Coast Live Oaks, Valley Oaks, and Scrub Oaks of the Santa Monica Mountains, acorns were gathered in the fall and stored dry and bug-free in tightly woven baskets to provide sustenance through the winter into spring.
Acorns contain tannins wich are bitter to the taste. These tannins were leached out by washing the ground acorn meal in a flowing stream or soaking the meal repeatedly in fresh water. Once the bitter substance was gone the meal could be cooked like gruel by placing hot rocks in a watertight basket or shaped into "pancakes" and cooked on a hot flat rock.
SUPER STAPLE is a very small camouflaged plastic box hidden near one source of acorns. It survived the Sept fire with no damage whatsoever. Think about why it was unharmed and log your ideas.

I spent waaay too much time finding this one. It's true that the coords are a bit off (you need to go a bit south I believe) but even so, it shouldn't have taken me as long as it did. I was stubborn though, and after a while found it...very near where I had been probably 3 times before. D'oh!

Lady Lamont and I found this one in fine shape, but the cover does make the GPSrs jump around a bit. Be patient and use your geosense. We have placed 6 other geocaches in Dayton Canyon for you to find.
