Ross
Mountain
"This is furthest I've ever
hiked down to bag a peak.
This is the most I've ever
climbed to get off a peak."
Quoted from a Sierra Club Ross Mt. Summit
Post
Ross Mountain only has an altitude of 7402 feet, which is quite
lower than its towering neighbors. It is evidently named for an
early pioneer homesteader in this area.
To get to Ross you have to start from the top of
Mt. Baden-Powell. From the top of Powell, continue South-East
to a ridge that extends out 3.1 miles and 2100 feet down to the
cache. You will be returning to Powell the same route.
The Sierra
Club rates this hike as "Very Strenuous". Overall, from
parking - cache - parking, you are looking at about 14 miles, so be
prepaired for a long day. I hiked it solo, but depending on your
hiking ability and physical condition you may not want to do this
alone. Do not count on following a trail, for all practical intent,
there isn't one.
The cache is Pelican Container that contains the following:
- Log Book with pencil
- Black Diamond "Gizmo" Head Lamp for 2nd to Find
- Spoon/Fork Campers Knife
- Six function Compass, Thermometer thingy
- Two packs of 2 each Lithium AA's
