Come out to The Shack at Winthrop Lake and join us for a
celebration of 10 years of geocaching! You will get a unique icon
for attending. We will be having a pot luck meal. Please make a
note in the log as to what you will bring so we don't end up with
20 bags of chips and 1 bottle of soda. :)
TIME: 4:00pm to 7:00pm
DATE: Sunday, May 2nd
LOCATION: Winthrop Lake, Rock Hill, SC
We will be gathering around 6:30pm for a group photo.
There is lots of room here so bring a frisbee or football. There
is a world-class disc golf course as well. You can fish if you have
a license too. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash. They can be
on the outdoor patio but are not allowed inside the building.
GPS systems have been around for a few decades. However, the
higher accuracy was reserved for the military and a select few
others (commercial aviation, etc). However, on May 2nd, 2000, this
"Selective availability" was turned off. Instantly, all GPS
receivers could now get highly accurate readings.
On May 3rd, 2000, a GPS enthusiast, decided to test the accuracy
by hiding a bucket in the woods and posting the coordinates on an
internet newsgroup. Within 3 days, two different people had found
this hidden stash and an obsession was born. An obsession that on
March 8, 2010, resulted in geocaching.com marking it's 1 millionth
active hide!
In more local news, on June 6, 2001, the first York County
geocache was hidden. It is
GCD80 - Ferguson's Folly. This is a virtual and is still active
today. The first York County traditional cache was
GC3FFE - The Camping Stash. It was placed on March 5th, 2002
and has since been archived. The oldest cache in Rock Hill is
GC8289
- BTC Cache and is still active.
