Geocache Description:

Sax Man's Campout

(5th annual)

July 3-6, 2008

This campout is the highest annual gathering of Geocachers in the Rocky Mountain Region! It draws primarily from Colorado, but has brought cachers from other states as well as another country. We've brought cachers together from Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, Wyoming, and Germany. Let’s see how many more states and countries we can have represented!

This year the 4th of July is on Friday, so we're expecting many people will get off work early on Thursday. Cripple Creek is only an hour from Colorado Springs. Even if you don't get off until 5pm, you can still arrive before it gets dark.

Event Schedule (tentative):
Thursday afternoon: Check-in and setup camp, event volunteers meeting, place temporary caches for the event, etc.
Thursday evening: Dinner on your own followed by ghost stories and other fun stuff around the campfire. Margaritas and daiquiris provided by your hosts, but bring something of your own to share!
Nightcaching. Bring a good flashlight or two!

Friday morning: Explore the area at your leisure
Friday afternoon: 2pm Geocaching Scavenger Hunt
4pm Poker Run
Friday evening: 6pm - Potluck dinner.
8pm Carpool to 9/9:30pm fireworks show in Cripple Creek

Saturday Morning: Pancake breakfast provided by your hosts
Saturday Late Morning: Adults hike to the waterfall and beyond, Kids activities with Sax Man's Wife
Saturday Afternoon: Geo-Foxhunt
Trivia Challenge
Accuracy Contest
Saturday Evening: Dinner 6pm - The campground is offering smoked beef brisket, barbecued chicken, and German sausage (very good!). This will come with three salads, two potatoes, baked beans, home baked dinner rolls, desert, and coffee & ice tea. The price is $8.35 per person. If you'd rather make your own dinner that's fine too.
8pm - Awards Ceremony and prize drawing around Sax Man's campfire. BYOB
Tickets for the drawing will be sold throughout the weekend. The drawing includes 2 GCCO Gold Coins and other items TBA. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.

Sunday Morning: The campground will provide breakfast for a nominal fee. It will be all you can eat biscuits & gravy, pancakes, fresh fruit, juice & coffee. Breakfast price is $3.50 per person. Otherwise, you're on your own for breakfast.
Sunday late morning: Clean up your camp area and find some caches on your way home.

This campground is at an elevation of nearly 9,000 ft so temperatures remain cool in the summer (70's likely). It is forested with a stream running through the campground. There are restrooms and showers (yes, showers!) at this campground. There is also a play area for the kids.

We have room for approximately 30 vehicles at this time and can get more if we need it. Those who need electrical hookups (read: RV's) will pay $21 per night for two people and $5 for each additional person. Children under 5 are free. If you don't need hookups (read: tent camping) you pay $5 per person per night. Children under 5 are free. All fees are collected by the campground when you arrive. I am not collecting money for camping from anyone this year (read: a lot less stress in hosting the event!)

Please post a note with the number of people in your party and what type of camping (tent, RV, trailer, etc) you'll be doing. See the Geocaching Colorado Forums for a discussion thread about the event.

"Pets Are Welcome - Your pets are welcome to camp with you at no extra cost, but must never be left alone at your campsite. It is your responsibility to pick up after your pets no matter where you walk them. Your pets are welcome to hike with you as long as they are on a lead at all times while in the campground. This is very important for the safety of your pets."

As always, more details will be added as the event gets closer. Please put this event on your watchlist if you want to receive updates.
